$75.00 later and a new battery
About a month ago the beast was dead as I had not been on it for about a
month due to bad weather. Now
a month later it's dead again. The dealer looked at the battery and it
was dry as the Sahara, I swear when I looked
at it a month ago I thought I saw fluid in there, the service guy did
have a hard time and took a minute to
get a rag and wipe the outside off.
BTW, this is a 2008 less than a year old? Live in TX and it's in housed
in garage? How often does everyone
check this type of thing? I need to do it more, duh!
Thanks!

I don't check mine that often except for maybe a big
trip. A couple of cells will usually be low but it is
never dead unless the battery is kaput or I have left
the key on. Sounds like something isn't right since it
is an '08. My batteries seem to last 3 or 4 years.
Being a Texas guy myself, I thought all Texas is far.

Question;
Did you have it on a battery tender of any kind?

Unfortunately, Kawi didn't pop for an AGM battery when they did their
suite of upgrades for the '08 KLR. I'm curious as to how much fluid
you saw in there--full or low? And how dirty was the outside?
Since you now have a history of battery trouble, I'd check it once a
month or more for a few months to see how much fluid it's using. If
you use a battery tender, the small charges it applies will
eventually cause the fluid level to drop, and a dirty battery will
self-discharge so keeping the top clean is important, too.
Yuasa makes an AGM battery that fits the KLR perfectly, you might
consider buying that one next time. I've had one now for 3 years or
so without a problem.

I've boiled a battery dry in a week, but that was riding every day on a
trip, in the summer, in Florida
I use sealed gel batteries now so don't have to check the water. Always
hated that anyway.
But based on my experience, a month is too short, unless you're
over-charging it (bad voltage regulator/rectifier, or charging the battery
with a car charger).
best,
Chris

Eric,
What's the Yuasa Part Number for that battery and what year model is your
bike?

The factory battery in my 04 worked great. I got 20,000 miles on it
and just replaced it 2 months ago. It was a hassle though to add
water every 4 or 5 months. However, I am happy to have my new sealed
battery. Push starting a KLR650 is a bitch unless you got a nice
hill.

My KLRs also dry out their batteries very quickly. The 2006 that I
have in CA sits for as much as 3-4 months at a time, and since I put
an AGM battery in it, it holds a full charge during that time.
I bought a trickle charger last year but didn't connect it to the bike
when I parked it in October. In March (almost exactly 5 months
later), I connected it when I got there but it showed "fully charged".
It also started right up, but I had prepared it a little bit, not knowing
when I'd be there next: added Seafoam, ran the carb dry, parked it
in the garage.
