Backfire on deceleration Would like some input to resolve an issue: 2008 KLR with Jardine Exhaust running Dynajet Stage two. OEM Air Filter, no modifications or increased venting of air box. On deceleration, I have a small backfire. I have pulled plug and seems to be running a bit lean based on the condition of the plug. Suggestions?

<><><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><> Martin, Can you share with us exactly what a Dynajet Stage two entails? I'm also not familiar with the Jardine Exhaust. We did have dinner with him on the Great Divide Ride in 2004 when we camped at his hotel/camping area. A stab in the dark would be you need to richen the idle mixture a tad as on deceleration you have the throttle closed and are still sucking lots of air but using the idle jet for fuel delivery. Have you tried cracking the throttle just a tad to reduce the lean popping? Martin, Start by making sure the nuts holding the headpipe to the head are tight. If they are loose, or the gasket in this area is leaking, this can cause the backfire even when the bike is properly jetted. all the best, Mike

Should the muffler clamp and/or mounting screws be loosened before tightening the head-pipe nuts? ED

ED, In theory, the hanger clamp and the clamp at the joint should be loosened before tightening the headpipe nuts. The tighten them up after, of course. In practice, they seem to loosen at about the same rate either way. all the best, Mike all th

Don't know about your aftermarket pipe, but with the stocker I've been able to mess up the copper gasket by not having things perfectly aligned when I tightened the pipe to the head (just call me 'talented'). Instead of just tightenting everything, you might check to see if the copper gasket is in there correctly and the pipe fits flush against it. __Arden

My Stock 2002 (Kilroy) also has a slight backfire, going down hill. It has a little over 3000 miles. I guess this can be corrected?. **************Planning your summer road trip? Do you have references for the claims of moly in the Mobil and other oils. Thanks. ED I just copied and pasted from the Mobil 1 website. J
