valve shim size data collection

Post by Jeff Saline » Fri Mar 21, 2008 8:38 am

Listers, I've been asked a question about valve shim sizes and would like to gather a bit more data to provide a more complete answer. I need your help. The gist of the question is what valve sizes should I get to hopefully have the correct ones on hand when I do my first valve adjustment? I like this question as it shows clear thought and forward thinking. It's also a money and time saver if you are in a remote area and shims are tough to get. I realize answering this question is kind of like trying to give an answer to the question "How long is a piece of string?" Data I currently have is for my bike which I consider hard data since I know it to be correct. I also have a bunch of shims collected from other valve adjustments but I didn't keep data showing what shims were in place and when or what they were replaced with. So I'd like to gather your HARD data in the below format. I appreciate folks trying to remember or "thinking" this is what I did but today I'd like only hard facts. I'm looking for FIRST valve adjustment HARD data. Year/Model Miles Ex/In clearance shim start shim replacement (inches or mm) 2003/KLR650 3269 ex 0.004" 275 265 3269 ex 0.004" 265 255 3269 in 0.005" 270 265 3269 in 0.005" 265 260 Please either post your data to the list where I'll capture it or send it to me directly at salinej1@... . I'll see how I do with a response and post the results to the list in a few days. Thanks for your consideration and accurate data. Great to hear of good service, BUT, there is a reason they did this as there could be some type of issue with the model whereas the mfg has told all dealers to replace it immediately, google the issue and see if it shows up alot and if so swap it for another model!
