strange phenomenon klr starts but won't go

KLR Buffs,
I had a short term problem with my KLR yesterday after a 20 mile ride
at a steady 65+/- mph. I then exited the paved road I'd been on and
rode at about 10mph on a hard packed sand road for about 1 minute and
then parked my bike for about 15 minutes while I adjusted my Garmin
Rino 530 GPS mount and took a short break.
When I got back on the bike it seemed to start normally but when I
kicked it down into first gear it quit the moment I let out the
clutch. This strange phenomenon repeated itself about 7-8 times until
I decided I might be low on gas and switched my fuel petcock to
reserve and the problem immediatly went away.
I'm not sure the switch to reserve fixed the problem or not since
after a minute or two of running at highway speed again I decided to
experiment and switched back to "on" with my petcock and the problem
didn't re-appear.
Anybody have a clue here? If this was a car I'd be guessing vapor
lock but frankly I'm at a loss.

$bob$,
That's what happens when the side stand is down if the safety switch is
working. If your side stand was up maybe the switch was sticking. After
a few moments of fiddling with the petcock maybe the switch crept into
the "run" position.
The switch is located under the black plastic cover above the side stand
and left footpeg. A screwdriver is needed to remove the cover. You can
follow the cable to find it. Maybe blow some air around it to help clean
it off. I think oiling it would maybe cause problems in a sandy
environment.

Bob,
I had exactly the same thing happen. Bike was idle for a few weeks. Engine started, 1st gear selected, release clutch and then stalled. Engine revved out in neutral no problem. Definitely electrical so I cleaned all sidestand, clutch switches and tried again. No good. Could not figure it out.
So then I clutch started the bike in 2nd gear. Ran perfectly then and ever since. I HAVE NO EXPLANATION. Any theorists out there?

I don't have any theories as to what it may be, but I do know that one
of the very first things I did to my 2006 when I bought it was to
disable both the clutch and the kick stand safety switches because I
did not want to go somewhere, only to be stranded if one went bad.
I've put over 40,000 miles on it with no safety issues.
My 2 cents, Tim.......

You wouldn't be stranded, though you would have to defeat the interlock to
get going again. That could be a royal pain.
I've left both interlocks on my bike. I don't particularly care about the
clutch one, and my remove it. I bought a new cable to make the sidestand
interlock work better. I like the backup, the safety aspect of the sidestand
interlock. Riding off with the sidestand down can easily result in a nasty
high-side wreck, and is potentially fatal. I think I've left a sidestand
down only once in 22 years, and no harm came. But I like backup.
best,
Chris

Hi Chris,
Staying alive/safe is a matter of having a 'constant', or predictable
pattern of doing it the same way every time procedure--it will keep
you from driving off with the side stand down. I suggest:
1) Mount the bike
2) Lift/wipe the side stand with the left foot
3) Key on
4) Pull the trigger, etc (some suggest, always clutch in. shrug. )
Never pull the trigger unless you 'wipe' with the left foot first.
revmaaatin. no side stand safety, the environment is to dirty to
trust the switch. shrug. YMMV

I haven't disconnected the sideatand safety switch on my bike but don't really see any issues going without it because I find when I set on the bike if the sidestand is down it hits the ground as the suspension settles. That being said I agree with the Rev, the firet thing I do after I mount is put the sidestand up, always.....have a great day.....Greg

Sounds like an aviator and a pre-flight plan

Good way to go.
I do all of that, and I taught all of that when I taught.
And I still like backup

Chris,
Did you notice, I said, "It is what your should do"...suggesting, that
I don't always get it done...every time. smile. Particularly when
tired...which is a good indication it is time to park the beast before
it parks on you.
I did manage to get an RD35O up to 70+mph with the side stand down, and
I 'discovered' it would not go up dragging it on the pavement. It will
however, allow you to exit straight-ahead while attempting to make a
sweeping right hand turn on I-70 near Kingdom City, MO at 70mph--up
into the grass embankment. If I had not the years of HODAKA experience
and presence of mind to 'stand up' on the pegs, it could have been
ugly. If it had been a guardrail rather than a smooth transition
from shoulder to grass embankment, the outcome would have been
questionable.
Offroading on an RD350 at 70mph is one of the more memorable moments in
my life.
