Team KLR, thanks fella's for the great replies. I was in need of a
valve clearance primer, as I have had my head in my snowmobile
clutching and suspension setup most of the winter.
When my local shop did the adjustment at 1500 mi, I had the same
conversation with the mechanic (in person). He was very experienced
and new to hit the "target" so that natural wear would keep them in
tolerance, and not just close it up with them " barely in spec".
I also had him diagram what the clearances were and which one had a
shim adjusted.
So I am confident my approach (my mechanic's approach) were sound.
now my record keeping is another story . .
This diagram is as home in a file (somewhere) and just was not handy
for me here at work.
I recall him stating that he liked doing this adjustment because then
the valves would be good for a good long time. I just wanted to get
a consensus from the group as to what they felt a good long time
was. And also what to listen for.
Now you've got me thinking, I need to go fire her up and listen some
more.
(I love it when I do stuff like this and my wife thinks I am nuts)
One more question: would audible valve sound be louder at cold vs
hot engine temp??
Again, great feedback, I will keep a copy of this writeup to serve
as a reference.
I think I will try to take this on before this season is up.
thanks again, this list is the best.
