an motorcycle trailer that is also a camper?

I have seen motorcycle trailers on the side of the road that are basically enclosed utility trailers that are used to haul motorcycles and seem to provide at least a little bit of a travel trailer feel to them. I am aware of "toy hauler" trailers that are basically travel trailers and fifth wheel campers that have room for motorcycles and other "toys" in the rear but they're a bit out of my price range. What I'm trying to accomplish is to haul my KLR in the trailer and when I take it out I then have room to use the enclosed trailer as a budget camper. I'm looking for something inexpensive for weekend or even slightly longer trips. Anyone seen something like this? Links? Experiences? Recommendations for the weekender on a budget? $bob$

Here's one I found but it's bigger and more expensive (probably) than I can afford. http://www.paceamerican.com/trailers/explorer/#specInfo I'd like to see one based on a 12' long trailer that was only 6'-7' wide if possible with a front door so I could pull it with my Toyota 2002 4wd Tacoma and be reasonably comfortable with a couple one person bunks and the capability to haul only one bike (KLR). I might have to set up my own but I'd sure like to find one that was affordable and better yet used. Yeah... I know that some of you are sneering and thinking that a tent on the back of the bike should be adequate but when you get to be my age sleeping on the ground is no longer an adventure but rather a hardship.... $bob$ _____ From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com [mailto:DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Bob Monahan Sent: Tuesday, March 18, 2008 9:34 PM To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_KLR650] An Motorcycle Trailer That is Also a Camper? All depends on what you mean buy camping trailer. How about just getting an enclosed trailer like the carpenters haul to the jobsite with their saws and stuff in. A chemical toilet and a propane camp stove, build some bunks, put in a window and your all set. Haul some water along and use a camp shower. Bob Monahan wrote:

Take a look at www.carsontrailer.com. Carson makes a line of small, lightweight toy haulers that have all the basic amenities (but not the bells, whistles and oak cabinetry) that you need for comfortable accommodations. Some models can be had for under $10K new if you find the right dealer. You might also search RVtrader.com under "Carson" to see current prices. I really like mine, and it's very well made, IMHO. Carson is a trailer company rather than an RV company, so you know the base unit is sturdy.

Hello Bob, Oh, oh, oh, those toy haulers are nice! Gag, $20K+ nice (new). Shudder. That is a lot of nights at Motel 8. For ideas/starters, trying going to a place that sells horse trailers. No, not to buy one, but just for ideas. Many of these outfits have various accommodations that are Spartan to you-got-to-be- kidding accommodations. Spartan would be, a space for a folding cot (painful to put up and down every night) or something that folds vertically into the bulkhead, but will stick out about 6 inches. shurg. You might even get an address from the manufacturer, and get them to build you what you want. shrug. Then, for a second opinion, Go back and have a look at a snowmobile trailer, pointed in the front for less wind resistance-and begin to imagine what you might be able to do inside one of those babies. It has a ramp in the back, and one to drive out the front/side. To make this work, you will need some internal framing, i.e. square tube skeleton to mount that single bunk that folds up vertically into the bulkhead. Most of the trailers are not 'stressed' very well to take a lot of weight hung on the bulkheads without additional bracing. Add some windows to the side for ventilation--available at any place that builds campers, etc. As a third option, (closer to my budget) a used 4-horse trailer that has not completely rusted out, could be easily be boxed in, windows added, with plenty of space to load motorcycles. Caution: look at a horse trailer closely: there is usually a reason it is for sale; it is worn out or rusted out! And spendy to repair properly. Cough. But maybe, (closest to my budget-smile) the best option is to buy one of the wire bed trailers, and sleep in the van or the pickup w/ shell- camper that tows it. shrug. And lastly, I saw what appeared to be "sleeping-box" mounted on the front of a car carrier, with the motorcycles/4 wheelers tied to the back. Seemed to work well for them, the box was removeable, and the car carrier returned to do more than just hauling toys. It all depends on how deep are thou pockets. revmaaatin.

Excellent review of choices. I'll add one -- buy a tent. You can get a real nice stand-up-in-it tent for $200. Waterproof, no-see-um netting, rain fly, etc. Chris P.S. Regarding the horse trailer, you could just carry along a bale of straw for bedding ... -----Original Message----- From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com [mailto:DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of revmaaatin Sent: Wednesday, March 19, 2008 2:23 PM To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Re: An Motorcycle Trailer That is Also a Camper? --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "Bob Monahan" wrote:
