how not to remove rust

I found an old adjustable wrench that had been out in the weather, but worth cleaning up. I had bought some muriatic acid to clean concrete with. I got the idea that it might clean the rust off the wrench. All I could find to use for the container was an old aluminum paint sprayer bottom. It has a lot of pant in it so it took it a while to develop a problem.
I stuck the wrench down in it and was amazed at how well it took off the rust. However, I turned my attention to something else for a moment, then turn around and a huge amount of very dangerous smoke was coming from the can. It was HOT, but I got it out of the garage, without breathing enough to kill me. It did cause a lot of things in the garage to rust, so I probably caused a lot more rust by using it than I got rid of.
Any of you chemist want to tell me how close I was to killing myself? I breathed a little and it hurt. Luckly I did not have a dog around--it would surely have killed it.

Here's a pretty good write-up of why that happens

Short story: steel has a thin layer of metal oxides that prevent rusting.
The acid etches or disolves that protective layer.
