I just downloaded my digital copy of Cycle World - April edition, there is a four page article on the HDT diesel. "At least 2009 before civilian models are delivered." I guess we may hear that for a few more years

While the diesel KLR makes for great conversation I have my doubts that it will be a successful commercial venture. For the military it has several advantages; fuel that won't explode and compatibility with other available fuels. For civilian use the only real advantage is mileage, but then I'm not sure that really wlrks out either. Just doing rough mental math, at 100,000 miles, $3.00 for regular unleaded and $3.50 for diesel (that's what it is here in WI), there is a $2000 savings in fuel cost. That's figuring 100mpg diesel and 55 gas. If my memory serves me the sell price was pretty lofty. This does not make economic sense. Then there's the whole diesel thing. Sure its a torque monster but the last diesel I drove wasn't much fun unless you're towing. So maybe the diesel KLR will be great in the boonies, but its still a top heavy pig. I'm certain the diesel won't be a lightweight. I have doubts that this project has any real impact for anyone other than the tree huggers and nut bags. Bit it does make for great print!

Having said that, I have always wanted to begin making my own biodiesel, but it just hasn't hit the top of my priority list even though I drive a diesel car (2002 VW Golf TDI) and love it dearly. People are impressed with my average of 46 or 48 MPG (mostly freeway) and 600+ miles per tank, but by the time you pay the higher servicing costs, etc. I really don't save much money if any. 'Course, I could do my own service now and save a BUNCH of money. It has gone 100K miles with nothing replaced but some glow plugs and a sensor, but the stealer... I mean dealer... price for a starter is around $800 USD with tax and all, plus installation. I have never priced one at my local stores. I suppose that an alternator would be similarly inflated. Hi Jeff, glad you enjoyed the tire thing as much as I enjoyed your postings....timing on the light relay upgrade is excellent. It's also on my hopefully soon to be started so I'm not doing it while I should be riding it winter maintenance. I ran accross the www.easternbeaver.com site somehow, certainly interesting when you google that the first time and after looking at what they can supply I think I'll get most of the parts there. A buddy of mine runs a Carquest and while he can provide most of the parts, easternbeaver has a better selection at a much better price, even considering shipping. Rather then go with one of their kits I'm going to make mine up so it will fit properly and be mounted how and where I want it and not where the wires reach to, plus since I already have all the needed tools to do it why not make it custom. I remember this subject being mentioned a month or so ago and at that time thought that I would go with #10 wire but when I got looking the smallest plastic flex I have nicely will fit #12's and easternbeavers kits are #14, so #12 should be fine. I think I'll still do some voltage drop checks with a few different gauge wires including OEM once I get the wire length decided on just to see the differences. A few things I liked about the stuff I found on their site that I couldn't find locally were the male headlight plug that allowed the relay harness to be installed without modifying the original headlight wiring, the fact that I could get the needed relay bases and sockets without pigtails already installed so I choose the wire size. The last thing was the weatherpack ATM and ATO fuseholders, these look superior to the other fuseholders I had been looking at.
