2008 klr oil use?

Post by Arden Kysely » Mon Feb 04, 2008 9:12 am

Are there any '08 owners out there experiencing excessive oil use? The test bike I had burned over a quart in 800 miles and there's quite a thread on this over at KLR650.net, but I haven't seen anything about it here. A friend of mine is considering an '08 and I'm trying to pin down the oil use issue for him, and for my own edification. Thanks, __Arden

I'm got 10,900 miles on my '08. I burn a quart every 500 miles. I broke her in using a modified "Moto-man" technique. The technique doesn't seem to have much to do with it as many '08's have been reported as being oil burners who followed the manufacturers recommendation. I have been meticulous with the maintenance. She runs great, I just adjusted my valves (which were tight, so don't wait until 15K as suggested). One factor is that I commute at about 5,200 rpms much of the time. I've switched from Amsoil to Rotella dino to save $$. The bike runs great. It just makes bad gas mile and drinks oil. I'm not bothering Kawi about it. Some have had giblets replaced under warranty and it has done nothing to remedy the problem. I don't have any real numbers, but my gut tells me that about 10-15% of '08's suffer this malady. I'm just unlucky (I don't get good seats at concerts, etc). The real solution is the big bore kit. That will fix it. However, that's a minimum of $300 and $300 will buy alot of Rotella. I hope this helps. Don+

2008 klr oil use?

Mine started using oil at about 25,000 and had a top end job done and it doesn't smoke or use oil noticeably at 46,000 and I always run at 5200 rpm even when it is 100 degrees. A friend, his started burning oil bad at about 15-18,000 and he went in and did the larger piston, bore etc. He says the stock oil ring on stock KLR's isn't up to snuff. Criswell

how to eval a helmet.-another question

My own experience is that the cheaper helmets are noisier. I have a Dainese full face that is definitely top end. Its far quieter and noticibly lighter than the 3 HJC's I've used as well as the Chinese $100 special. I'm curious if this is typical of more expensive helmets. I've noticed that all the major manufacturers are coming out with models with venting scoops toward the rear. Is this just a marketing ploy or is this the next best thing??

Wow! 46K miles on an '08? You are doing some traveling my friend. I thought I was doing well by putting 10K in 6 months. :o) Don+
