Keep the Concours, you won't be able to keep the BMW if you can't
afford both. I have a '95 RS with 23000 mi. which I am building its
third trans. Should you want a BMW, look to pre '85 only. The rest are
crap. Oh, those transmissions are only $2500.- though.

1995 is first year of oilhead, lots of problems. 1997 and up corrected
most, except "surging" Your 1997 Concours is way better (than a 95BMW) for
half the price. I have 100,000 plus on my 2000 BMW, nothing done to it,
very reliable.

I just went thru the same research on BMW's. There was some real good deals on R1100R's around here. The years were 1994 to 1997 or
so. Went to a Beemer list, asked around, all reports were the 94 thru 97 had trans problems, like the gentleman said, $2500 if you
get a bad one that needs fixing.
I think it was 98 when they came out with the improved trans??

My '95 R1100GS has 80k, no transmission problems ever. Best bike I've
ever owned (shhh). I got nothin'.

I have a 75 airhead, had a 95 R1100RS, and now have a 2001 Connie.
The 75 is a true classic. Built like a John Deere tractor, and about
as sophisticated. Great bike for the tinkerer. The RS I had only
briefly. It had "issues", like poor starting, roving idle and oil
consumption. I did the forum thing and found that most owners liked
their bikes but almost all had horror stories somewhere. One member
advised that I find a trashed R1100 just so I could take it apart and
get to know it better---because I would need to! The local BMW
mechanics had little to offer in advice other than "bring it in". I
don't find them a real friendly bunch in general. The Connie, on the
other hand, is pretty trouble free, cost about a grand less for a 6
year newer bike with half the miles and has no impending issues. The
BMW R bikes have transmission, rear drive train, fuel injection and
head bearing issues. The worse issue on the Connis seems to be carbs
that need rebuilding every couple of years for some from dirt in the
gas (remedied with good filters), fuel petcocks that can go south and
cause severe engine problems similar to our own doohickey, also
easily remedied with an aftermarket petcock. The Connie is definitely
faster but the BMW was no slouch either. BMW brakes are great, but
just OK in the connie. Sound familiar? Both have strong forum
support, but the Connie just has fewer issues. Parts are readily
available too. I rode the BMW pretty fast and found it 'quick" but
not breathtaking. The Connie, at 10,000RPM will fill your system with
adrenaline in every gear but 6th, if you have the guts. While BMW has
that reputation for rolling the odometer over it is not so prevelant
with the oil heads as it was with the airheads. Connies can go the
distance but not many make it to 200,000. On the other hand the BMW's
that roll 200k usually have serious rebuilds. Either way you have a
great bike. One is just more expensive than the other.

Yeah, I had to replace all the driveline splines on my 1989 BMW K100 LT
($2,000!) only 5,000 miles after a BMW dealer checked them all, said they
were fine, and greased the transmission input splines.
On the good side, the transmission fit in the trunk on my 1981 Honda CB750F,
which was much more reliable than the BMW, so I could get it serviced.
Feel free to insert jokes about grease and shafts ...
recovering BMW owner,
Chris
P.S. So I bought a 1992 Honda ST1100 ABS, and it was the bike I thought I
was getting when I bought the BMW. Now I've had the Honda for about 8 years,
and it still hasn't cost as much as one BMW repair.

~~~I was wondering when someone would jump in and recommend to Tom to
think about buying a used ST 1100. I bought a 93' ST third hand in
01' with 21 K miles on the odo, rode it for a few years and sold it
with 90 K miles showing. Only part failure I had was a clock
illumination bulb burn out at 48 K miles. Now that the ST 1300 has
been available for 5 years, finding a good price on an 1100 should be
fairly easy
Run my '95 R11GSA 50K miles in 3 years including running over a deer.
Not never any problems cept a slight pull to the left when taking my
hands off the bars after hitting the deer. Still run it for another
20K after the incident.
''97 R11RA./ about 30K miles in 3 years. No problems except banging
the bottom of the engine on rocks on mountain backroads.
Hence. '03 R1150GSA 50K miles in 4 years. Never a problem. Got rid of
it due to dealer problems and distance and just wanted to try
something else for a bit.
I've had friends riding them , Agree, One of the finest bikes ever
made. Just not enuff ground clearance for the roads I like to ride
once in awhile is the reason I've never bought one.
