Gerry,
This is the item/footpegs Jeff was talking about:

I believe they are 'cast' IMS foot peg clone and not a forged, or
cold-rolled steel foot peg, which is not obvious in the ad. I also
believe would break if they hit the pavement really hard, vs. the DR
foot pegs that would simply bend. Not an issue for me, just the
facts, ma'am.
Just like an IMS foot peg, these foot pegs will significantly move
your foot position rearward and upward in relation to the shift pedal
and brake pedal. On my KLX300R with IMS pegs, I get along just fine
with the IMS pegs--even with full MX boots. With the IMS 'clone
pegs' on the KLR650, I had to move my foot from the peg to shift, and
the rear brake pedal was nearly useless; several on the list have
done small mods of adding a 'pad' to the top of their brake pedal to
make it in-line with the longitudinal axis of their foot. shrug. Our
friend AJ Clifford (aka Reaps;as well as many on this list) has IMS
foot pegs on his KLR and gets along just fine, cough, but he has a
size 13 foot! Shoving the instep of the foot rearward, only makes it
easier for him to shift.
I used the IMS clone (dead ringer for the real deal on the KLX) for
about 6 hours on the KLR and moved back to the narrower DR pegs. The
wide IMS peg is GREAT for standing on, which I do a lot of on both
the KLX and the KLR, but with full MX boots, it was not a good mod
for me on the KLR. It might work fine for you. The good for me, they
also fit the XR100, which I will fit these pegs too.
Which is to say, all farkle does not work equally well for all
folks. Jeff ordered 4 or 5 sets of these DR things and they were all
installed on our bikes before we pushed off on the GDR in 2004.
Never regretted having them once! I only bought the one's listed
above in the ebay ad because I liked them so well on the KLX300R;
installed when I bought it new-to-me with only 45 miles on the clock.
The KLR seat is another great example: Jeff gets along just fine
with a stock seat, and after 30 minutes riding in the stock seat, I
can barely walk after I get off the bike. I rode that beast that way
some 18-19K smiles before I gave up and went to a flat Corbin--only
because I was desperate. Not a perfect solution, but one I can live
with.
Kind of sad, the KLR comes with a crappy rubber coated foot peg that
will not safely support your foot if you stand up when it is wet, let
alone if it has mud on it. IMO--Serrated foot pegs are a must have--
just from a safety standpoint, even if you never leave the pavement
deliberately.
revmaaatin.
