torsion spring?

I'm new to KLR 650s, just got a really nice '04. I've got a doohickey
on the way from Arrowhead, but now I'm wondering if it would be
worthwhile to also install a torsion spring instead of the one that
comes with the kit. Opinions?
Thanks, Gerry

Gerry,
Welcome to the list and KLR ownership. I say put in the torsion spring.
I've done a few doohickeys with extension springs and redid one with a
torsion spring and have installed a few with torsion springs from the
start. Next time I go into my KLR I'm putting in a torsion spring. It's
been on the shelf for about 6-8 months now. At about 15,000 miles I went
in to check on the tension on the extension spring which came with the
doohickey. It was almost out of tension. I replaced it then with the
shorter spring. If the torsion spring was available then I would have
saved myself one trip into the engine.
Best,

"My area?" What area?
Keep your eyes peeled for a tech day in your area. They may appear here, or more likely on
klr650.net. It's an opportunity to borrow the special tools and get some coaching from a
more experienced hand. Sometimes the coach can't resist digging into the job, so you can
drink beer and schmooze Tom Sawyer-like while somebody willingly performs the task for
you.
