I have a number of issues with this alcohol blend thing, and have managed to avoid using the stuff so far. In NSW, Australia, not all brands have it (yet). A technical issue is that, litre-for-litre (gal4gal), it gives less energy than 100% hydrocarbons, and importantly it needs to be mixed with less air. In other words, with standard carby/injection settings, your motor will get too much air, ie it will run lean. This is because you can rearrange the formula for ethanol, C2H5-OH , to get C2H4-H2O. Thus it has a "free" molecule of water attached - except that you pay good $$ for it, and it can damage your engine if you're already jetted on the lean side when running 100% hydrocarbons. The alcohol lobby gets away with it only because most vehicles have a big enough safety margin of richness. I don't know what the theoretical or practical numbers relating optimum jetting to % ethanol are, though. Does anyone out there know? BTW, because of that H2O, ethanol is harder to ignite than 100% h-c, so this might give problems in some engines, though it means that the octane rating will be increased, as with methanol (CH3-OH). Environmentally, ethanol is at best of marginal benefit, if not disastrous. How much overall energy/CO2 reduction is gained after clearing land, making agrichemicals including fertiliser, on-farm energy use, grain transport, hydrolysing, brewing and, especially, distillation of the alcohol from the brew? B-all!! And the cost of farmland degradation (erosion)? How about the increased pressure on food prices?
