Hey Luc That is a great machine! You probably already know that you aren't going far off road with it though. The engine is sweet, poor man's Ducati to say the least. If you don't need/ care for going off road you'll Love it! Shane

Luc I just bought a 650 and really like it a lot. I chose the 650 over the 1000 in an effort to keep the bike as light as possible. It handles well and has a really smooth engine. I've got a buddy that has a 650 and a 1000 and he prefers the 650 saying it's better balanced due the lighter weight. The 1000 will pull better at highway speeds but the 650 is no slouch. I got the 650 late in the season so I haven't had it on gravel and will have to wait for the spring. All reports are that it's very competant for gravel roads and good 2 track roads. It's quite a bit cheaper than the 1000 as well. Good luck with your decision. Garrett Shane wrote: --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, Luc Legrain wrote:

I ride with a guy that has the 650. He has taken it on our highway trips where the rest of us are riding airhead BMW's and it easily keeps up (80+ mph). He and I ride dirt roads too. Him on the 650 V-Strum and I'm on the KLR. I have a hard time keeping up with him. He runs a Metzler Tourance on the back and a Michelin Anakee on the front. He's a rider (earlier retiree) with almost 30,000 miles on a two-year old bike. Don R100, A6F

Bon Jour, Luc, From intense personal experience, the 1000 Strom will surely feed your need for speed. I bought mine in '03 and whilst taking a cruise on a nice straight desert highway, I wasn't paying attention to anything but the scenery and noticed that the bike was smooth, quiet and that oncoming hay trucks were approaching at a rapid pace. The massive bow wave from the flat fronted hay haulers didn't even make the handle bars twitch. The DL does well in heavy side winds despite the ungainly looking fairing and tank shroud. Anyway, I snuck a quick peak at my tach and noticed that I was a little over 4000 rpm in sixth............or a little over 105 mph (168 kph) or maybe a lot. The beast can be a rocket on the pavement, although not up to it's brothers, the TL's. On gravel and desert two tracks it's a handful. It's top heavy and ungainly, sort of like the mighty KLR, but much worse. My KLR'S get about 45 - 50 mpg, day in and day out whilst the DL barely squeezes out 35 - 40 mpg with 36 the usual. And the best part about the DL, EagleMike knows their innards as well. I use my DL for long distance runs, 100+ miles, ...........the stock seat is infinitely more comfy than the Corbin or stock seats on the KLRs, the rest of the ergos are comfy, even for my 260+ pound ass. The used ones are going for a decent price down in the lower 48; I don't know what they're going for in Canada. It was worth it for my money! Buddy bseifert71@...

Wayne Blackburn wrote: My 1st guestion is did you check the balancer adjuster. The reason I ask is, My 07 with 10,500 miles on it did the same thing until it just quit all together. The bike was still under warranty,And I had already purchased the up graded (DOHICKY).So I decided to return it to the dealer. 4 weeks later they pulled the side cover off and found the lever had broken and cut the wire to the pulser coil. The best way to discribe the the sound is a blender with bolts in it. My bike now, Runs better than it did from day one. Fuel mileage went from 35 to 55 mph greasedog123 wrote: Need help-- Sent this out once before with no response. My 03 KLR with 39,000 miles suddenly sounded different when I cranked it up one morning. I ride it to work everyday about 14 miles round trip. I take good care of the bike and it has run perfect since new. It sounds like a bad bearing with a steady groaning and light knock. When I ran it there was no loss of power but just doesn't sound right. Definitely coming from inside the engine. I checked the clutch side and flywheel side for obvious loose things but everything looked ok. My cam chain is a little loose on the front side of the chain and I am not sure if it should have any slack since there is a spring powered tensioner. I also checked the valve clearance and they were within specs. The dealer wanted 3-400 bucks just to start so I decided to do the work myself. Any ideas?
