Hey-
I am at wits end.
I went for a good muddy wet ride two weeks ago on my 24,000km '89
KLR. I dropped the bike once at low speed with no damage. I stopped
for fuel when I was back in town. A few minutes later on the freeway
I noticed a power loss at higher speed. The bike would not go above
5000 RPM (110km/h). Bike starts and runs fine.
I assumed that I had gotten bad fuel and drained the tank and float
bowl and refilled with new gas with carb cleaner added. I pulled the
petcock and checked the screens - clean. I connected another line to
the vacuum post on the petcock. It appears to be working fine.
No joy.
I replaced the spark plug, and checked and cleaned electrical
connections. Checked air filter -clean.
No Joy.
I pulled the carb, dissasembled and cleaned. Main jet and needle
looked good. No sediment or debris visable. I inspected the slide
diaphragm. It looked okay, but I replaced it. (Thanks Harley)
No Joy.
I pulled the carb, dissasembled and cleaned. I inspected the slide
diaphragm. The new one looked okay, and well seated, but I pulled it
out, and reseated it. Cleaned the main jet and needle again. Checked
valves - A little tight, but still within spec.
No Joy.
I have run out of ideas. Thoughts?
Thanks,
Matthew

Matthew,
The first thing that comes to mind when reading this is the throttle
isn't opening fully. Will the engine go over 5,000 rpm in other gears?

Matt,
Take a look at the aircleaner. You may have finally saturated the
aircleaner with dirt and the bike cannot breath.

Hi Jeff-
Thanks for your message. The bike starts and runs fine. It revs
smoothly to redline with no load. It's just under load that is is
louder with no power.

Matthew,
Will the engine redline when under load in other gears?
What do you mean by louder with no power? Is the noise from the exhaust
or somewhere else?
Have you taken a look to make sure the throttle is fully actuating the
carb butterfly? Maybe disconnect the cables and see if the throttle
linkage mover further than what you've got with the cables connected and
while using the throttle on the bars.
Just a couple more questions and thoughts.

Sounds like someone put a governor on it? LOL
If that were possible, I have no idea where to look.
You don't have any practical jokers that have access to your garage do you?

I would suspect a torn / leaky / rotten vacuum diaphragm on the slide. When
you whack the throttle open, that doesn't directly lift the slide, it just
rotates a butterfly valve that alters the vacuum in the throat of the carb.
The slide actually gets lifted by lower pressure above the diaphragm
compared to below it. If the diaphragm leaks, the slide won't lift all the
way. It's not at all uncommon for the diaphragms to fail, and when they do
the engine will run exactly as you have described.
I believe TPI keeps the slide/diaphragm assemblies in stock for cheap.

I've decide to buy some pants I'll use. I have a pair
of leather Fieldsheer sport pants I only wear in front
of the mirror! OK, maybe I've worn them once or
twice. Got them when I had a /7 BMW. A crushed knee
is a bad thing. I have two crushed big toes thanks to
those gorgeous air heads (perfectly situated to crush
your toes). Oh yeah, I can't run (I love to run -
soccer player and runner), I can't squat - yeah, you
use your toes alot there, and I can't reach for things
up high - yeah - toes again.
So, winter coming, I've decided to get some useful
pants. While I love the Olympia Ranger 2s, and some
others, you can get some sweet Tourmaster pants for
$100. Though I did vow to never buy another
Tourmaster product again after their winter gloves and
non-customer care pissed me off, they do have sweet
stuff. I have another pair of gloves and a rain suit
that remind me of their general quality and
understanding of moto riding.
BEWARE - NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM MOTORSPORTS IN
ALBUQUERQUE - They are truly useless losers and evil
bastards tambien.
Anyway. I'm not cheap, but I'm broke, so I spend it
when I have to. I have a nice Fieldsheer leather
sport jacket, a First Gear mesh jacket (paid too much
locally and then got screwed by Motorsport on a
quality issue - screw local, buy newenough.com), and a
big fluffy Roadgear winter jacket that is another long
story, but they all have armor and my shoulder still
works just fine!!

Eagle Mike figured it out - I had given the timing a casual look when I
checked the valves, but gave it a closer inspection today, and sure
enough, it was off by a tooth. Re-timed it, and after the other carb,
ignition, and exhuast work the bike runs better than ever.
Any thoughts on why it would jump a tooth?
Thanks, all, for the advice and help.
Cheers,
Matthew
