I'm a KLR noob - bought an A19 last week with 1k mi on it. I'm really liking it. My wife and I were both riding 199x Nighthawks until June when I got rear-ended on mine by a car. I'm ok (ATGATT, baby) but the bike was totalled. Well, I was already thinking about the KLR a lot, so I got right to shopping for one. I plan on doing mostly street (commuting) and some dirt road exploration. It is my pleasure to join this group. I've already enjoyed and learned from reading many posts. BTW, this is my second attempt to post. My first was a reply to "Help needed: No start, intermittent problem: Update" which has not appeared in the message list. Does the moderator approve each post before it goes up? Mike

I bought an A19 last week and it exhibited the exact behavior you describe. In my case, it was the hand guard that was pressing against the clutch safety switch and pushed it out of its "sweet spot". The fix was simple. I removed the switch cover and the hand guard and opened up the hole in the hand guard that the switch fits through with a Dremel tool. I didn't need to remove much material. Just an 1/8" or so near the end of the switch where is was pressing. I reassembled and adjusted the switch back into the sweet spot. Now the bike starts in neutral regardless of the clutch lever position and won't start in gear unless the clutch lever is pulled in. Mike

Ok, I figured out my post problem - I replied to the author rather than the group. Doh! Mike
