Some of you guys upgraded your stator to 300 or 400W, now the new KLR650 is out, there s a 3rd option. from the Kawa web page Alternator output has been increased from 14.5A to 17A. Total capacity is 36W to provide ample power for the new headlight as well as add-on grip heaters and other accessories 1 does anyone know if a swap would be possible/difficult and at what price? 2 I m planning to change the headlight bulb and install a 80/100. i m aware of possible socket melting so i already bought a new one... any other pb i should look at? like power consumption? can the original set up can handle this load.( i m thinking of adding a headlight relay as Norm did to limit power lost) thx Jerome

We're waiting for someone to order the parts and try it out. I already have an Electrosport 300 watt installed so this is moot for me excepting from the standpoint of information. That said, if prices were even close I would get the Electrosport rather than the Kawasaki part. If we don't support these aftermarket manufacturers, we will not have options excepting from the manufacturer. An Electrosport representative spent a lot of time answering questions and explaining on another forum. I appreciate this and try to find ways to support them because of this kind of service. Kawasaki take a different view which is their decision. Just my $0.02, As for power, the stock system will handle a 100 watt headlight without mods. Maybe you don't need to make the modification. After all, I don't see the logic in doing an endless list of mods. (LOL, #78 done and planning 4 or 5 more) Norm Norm [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I would also like to defend the stock Kawasaki charging circuit. I know some people have had problems, but I have the stock stator in my '06, and have run my 100w headlight on high beam, two 100w driving lights, handwarmers on high, and power for my GPS, all without the voltmeter dropping below 13 volts. I don't typically use all of these items at the same time, and I still wouldn't use them all together for very long, but it proves that the stock circuit can at least handle it. I'm going to upgrade the stator at some point, but its not an immediate priority. Jim

I put the Aerostich HID setup on my KLR about two weeks ago... actually finished at about 2:00 AM the morning before riding from San Diego to Kernville in the pouring rain to Warped 3. Light output is great - definitely an improvement over the Totally Wired Cycle loom and relay upgrade (which I really like and is a great improvement over stock for the price) with the 80/100 Sylvania "super" bulb. Power draw is (allegedly) lower than stock. I did have the headlight on and heated grips on full for substantial parts of the ride from San Diego to Kernville, around the mountains in the snow, and on the way back to San Diego. Charge indicator light stayed in the green all the time - I'm running the stock stator. The kit was fairly easy to install. Way too much extra wire length though. I will be tailoring the wiring over the next few weeks so that the installation is cleaner. There is a ballast that is about the same size as the regulator/rectifier. I mounted that under the right side of the fuel tank at the top right corner just behind the overflow tank - where the horn used to go. Guess I'll have to get around to mounting the Stebel Nautilus horn now.... Other than heavy duty wires from the battery (I actually ran them from the hot side of the starter solenoid and ground at the engine) everything else fit around or underneath the headlight. When I first installed the headlight and hooked everything up I had a problem with no low beam. Called Aerostich. Very thorough, courteous, helpful in resolving the problem. There was a jumper that had to be removed from the wiring loom. Everything worked just fine after that. I asked the tech how long the HID bulb would last. He said I should expect to replace the bike long before the bulb. When I pull it apart - after I clean up the wiring - I'll take some pic's if y'all are interested. Chuck C San Diego, CA

Chuck - thanks for the info! Love to see some pics. Does this replace both beams? I've got the replacement stator sitting on my workbench but haven't had time to install yet. Still trying to figure out what I want to do for lights. Jim

Thanks for the report, Chuck--glad to hear that it works well. I take it that you installed the headlight conversion kit, not the add- on lights, right? -- Blake Sobiloff http://sobiloff.typepad.com/blakeblog/> http://sobiloff.typepad.com/klr_adventure/> San Jose, CA (USA) [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
