klr650 hesitation when accelerating

my 1991 klr will occasionally hesitate as it accellerates at around
4000 rpm. if i am cruising at about 65 then accelerate to overtake,
the bike seems to miss a beat as i do so. it is fine after that. seems
worse on fairly aggressive use of the throttle. if i gently open her
up it seems fine. any ideas ?? carb or electrics. - i have the pilot
screw out 1 3/4 turns. (my first post as i have only recently joined
you !)

Sounds like it's starved for air, fuel or may have a worn plug. Hard
to tell which. Check your air filter then check the plug. And maybe
look at the timing. any one of the above could be the problem.

mjlyam850,
I'll make a wild guess it's a fuel delivery issue. Since the bike is
pretty old I'm gonna guess a fuel passage might be clogged just a tad OR
the needle is worn an excessive amount. Might be the slide is sticking a
little too. I'll bet the carb has never been apart and it just needs a
little attention.
Kerry suggested you check your spark plug. If you do pull it make sure
you clean around it very well first. There's usually lots of stuff
around the base of the plug. If you don't blow it out or somehow get it
away from there it will probably fall into the combustion chamber when
you remove the plug. Then you may cause more harm than good.
Good luck with it. Make sure you take it one step at a time so you know
what happens to performance with each change or repair you make.
Oh, and welcome to the list.
Best,
Jeff Saline

recommended oil...the conclusion...

Thanks to everyone for your opinions on the oil. By far most seem to prefer (or have no problem with) Rotella.
Special thanks to Jeff Saline for the tip on replacing the crush washer (complete with part number!!!).
I always was going to change the oil every 3k, but if changing every 3k w/Bel-Ray vs Rotella only gains me minimal (if any) extra engine life, I'll go with the less expensive alternative. Thanks again for the advice!
Jeremy
