I was not planning on partaking of this particular sport but had some
experiences today that have forced me from my silence. It was mid
60's and mostly sunny but the wind was hitting the mid 30's. So,
good day for a ride but not great.
Anyway, my first experience was at the gas pumps: Harley clone
decked in head to toe with every product you can buy that has a black
and orange label. Sneers my way and says, "They've only got gasoline
and diesel here bubba, no rice, huh, huh, huh." Witty bastard, eh?
I just quietly slid my paddleback holster with my Glock 45 into my
belt next to my badge before I walked inside to pay.
Second experience: Went to lunch at my favorite bar/burger stop. I
decide to leave the hardware in my seat bag so I go to find a place
out back on the patio where I can keep an eye on my bike and enjoy
the day. Four Harley clad clones sitting on the patio chugging
multiple pitchers (real smart, get good and drunk before riding your
$30,000 portable chrome museum). Mouthbreather #1 says to me, "I
thought you sport bike guys (Is a KLR a sport bike now?!?) only wore
that nylon sxxt with jap letters on it?" I responded by ignoring
him, eating my meal in silence, then ripping through the mud hole
next to their bikes at mach 12 when I was leaving. Enjoy polishing
that chrome boys!!!
Third experience: Went to a local leather shop that a friend told me
about that has decent chaps for cheap. I had no intention of buying
anything since I am flat broke right now and Christmas is around the
corner. Of course when I get there I am the odd man out. I proceed
to park right up front with the chrome crowd. When I walk inside I
am again surrounded by the HD nation. (Although to be fair I have to
add there was a Gold Wing and a few large metric cruisers in the
lot.) After the store owner answers a few questions about sewing
patches on chaps, jackets, etc. for a large group of couples who were
obviously all together, I ask him about the chaps my friend told me
about. He actually measures me, asks what I ride and how I ride,
then gets a pair of chaps down for me and says that he'll have to
clean and treat them for me before I buy them. I begin to ask him if
he could put them back for my family to buy them for Christmas, but
before I can one of the black and orange people pipe up and
say, "What the he@@ does he need chaps on that thing for?" The STORE
OWNER responds by saying, "I bet he rides his bike in a he@@ of a lot
worse conditions that you guys do." The group with the loudmouth
walks out and the owner tells me he gets really tired of the HD crowd
chasing off his potential customers. I bought the chaps and a new
pair of winter gloves on the spot with my credit card. I'll be
returning to his shop after the holidays to buy more stuff and taking
every friend I can find with me.
BTW, I logged about 190 miles after putting 5 gallons in my tank.
I'll have to gas up within the next 30 miles or so or I may have to
flip to my reserve tank. Hmmmm, wonder how far the chrome brigade
got today?

Yeah kind of those guys are really something. They must have really
little pee pee's. Motorcycles are motorcycles. I like pretty much all
bikes. Don't care for some riders.

I don't know why, but I hear very little of this kind of crap from Harley riders. The last time
I recall hearing much static about the bike I was riding was the year I took my 305
Superhawk to Sturgis. Lots of Harley riders went home with videos of my middle finger. On
the KLR, the comments typically range from inquisitive to openly envious, as in: "Looks
like you are having all the fun today."
But a soft answer can turn away wrath. Just compliment their rides: "Hey, nice bike. I've
been looking for something like that for my girlfriend."

I'm surrounded by the HD a-hole crowd. When I see them in action, I cannot fathom their infantile need to attract attention to themselves and do it in such a manner as to offend others. I seriously think many of them have psychological issues such as inadequacy and insecurity. When they get together in groups, they overcome their individual fears and as a whole, become arrogant and obnoxious. It is my feeling that individually, they are small people unable to accept themselves as who they are and desperately craving to free themselves of their inadequacies. They are truly pathetic.
My biggest fear however is wondering what is wrong with our society to produce so many of these losers? Is it a result of our rapid paced lifestyle that our significance as individuals is reduced to the point where the mentally marginal must resort to adorning themselves with gaudy accessories and machines just to satisfy their basic need to be recognized?
I take great satisfaction knowing that I have the fortitude and aptitude to see myself as who I am and not have the desperate desire to stoop to such depths for recognition from others.
Be thankful you are not in their ass less chaps.

Harley is being hurt by cretins like this. I'm in the market for a new touring bike. I honestly can say that I can put up with the deficiencies in the Ultra Classic but I cannot be around people like this. Sales will go to Honda or BMW.
