starter problem

Friday on my way home, after a paramedic almost broadsided me. (Who
didn't stop at the red light) even though he DID have the right of
way I didn't have time to stop. I was coming up on the intersection
fast and he blew right through it (I thought they were supposed to
stop at red lights and look for oncoming traffic)
SO ANYWAY.. I was at this gas station and I went to start my bike and
the starter was dragging real slow, Light were high and it seems as
if I had a good charge on my battery. Why would the starter be going
so slow? I had to hold it down for about 10 seconds before it was
moving enough to start the beast. Anyone have any ideas?

neutral, had the green light on, hit the starter and
nothing. Looked to see if the kill was off, figured it
was a loose terminal as I had it once before. OPened
it up, cranked down on the positive, presto! I've
never had a bike/battery that seemed to be finicky
about this. Anyway a crappy commute home becomes fun
on the KLR.

I've got a bike that won't start. Started out as intermittent and I
thought it was the start switch itself. Then I realized I still had
the same battery the bike came with (96) and bought a new battery.
that worked for about a week. Now the problem is no longer
intermittent. I push the starter button and just get a single click
(from the starter relay I assume). No starter motor engaging. Does
this sound like I need a new starter motor? Horn and lights work...Is
there a fuse for the starter circuit separate from the main fuse
under the seat?
If I get time I'm gonna tear into the starter motor on Thursday
morning but I want to get the bike running before the weekend so I
can go play in PA with da crew. Any and all advice on what to check
is greatly appreciated.

Try checking the wires under the seat ,also the battery connections, could
be a faulty earth, good luck Gary

Tumu,
There are two relays in the starter system:
1) Starter Circuit Relay (with 4 regular wires)
2) Starter Relay (with 2 heavy wires and a plastic connector with 2
regular wires)
Remove the plastic cover (below the petcock) that protects both
starter relays. Feel both relays with one hand while you press the
starter button. If the "main" relay clicks but the motor doesn't
spin, this relay is probably NFG. Before you tear into the starter
motor, use the handle ends of a set of pliers to connect the two
heavy wires on the starter relay. If the motor spins, you have a
faulty starter relay. DON'T let the pliers touch any part of the
engine or frame!!
Be sure to check the heavy ground (earth) wire where it connects to
the base of the starter motor (under the carb) for tightness and
corrosion. This is NOT the heavy wire that goes from the starter
relay to the starter motor.
There are only 3 fuses in the stock wiring system:
1) 20 amp main fuse* - for the whole system
2) 10 amp headlight fuse* - for the headlight circuit, "euro
. circuit", meter illumination lights, & rear illumination lights
3) 10 amp cooling fan fuse (behind the coolant recovery tank)
*under the seat

Try banging the starter relay with a screwdriver or similar handy object
while you hold in the starter button.
Pray for a faulty starter relay, it's much cheaper. Also, a quick
diagnostic is to short the thick wires on the starter relay with a
screwdriver (while wearing gloves). The starter will immediately crank,
along with a few blue sparks when you make the connection, if the relay
is what's at fault.

This sounds like it might also be a charging problem, as a new battery cured
it for about a week. You might want to spend a minute checking that out
before digging into the starter.

Speaking of batteries, I have read several articles about charging a new
battery before you install it in the bike. It said that if you don't, it
will never have its full potential. I have a 85 Shadow 1100 that has a very
marginal battery. Its the same battery used in the 700 shadow and does a
good job in them. If my 1100 sits for about three weeks, it must be charged
before it will start. Before I installed a new battery last year, I followed
their advice and charged it first. Had it on a two amp charger for eight
hours, and then the Battery Tender Jr. 3/4 amp, for 24 hours. Rode it
yesterday after sitting for five weeks, started right up. This is the
strongest battery I have ever had in this bike. I think this procedure is
good for all bikes, may even make them last longer.
