front tube blew out - valve stem totally ripped off

Post by nelson corcoran » Sun Jul 23, 2006 1:32 pm

hi, I have a 2005 KLR-650, I was going 70 mph and the front tube blew out. The whole area around the valve stem was completely ripped off and seperated from the tube. I thought the inflation was correct, the temperature here is very high - almost 100. I also added Ultraseal to the tires when new. The bike has 6000 miles. Does anyone know what would cause this? I don't brake that hard! Nelson __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

Hard to say Nelson, The valve stem tear out probably happened after the blow-out and the tire lost pressure. Front tires don't usually get as hot as the rear. It might have been heat related if you had been riding continuous for a couple hundred miles in the heat. Glad to hear you're OK, a blow-out at that speed can give you sphincter pucker for sure! --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, nelson corcoran wrote:

Nelson, I always advise guys to do an old enduro 'trick' to their KLRs - it's FREE! Loosen the nut that holds the tube valve stem tight to the rim, and then tighten it to the valve cap. Does two things: 1. keeps your valve cap secure; and 2. IF your tire 'slips' on the rim you WILL see it when you look at the valve stem, as it will be CANTED. This is your cue to break the bead and rotate the tire/tube till the stem is again vertical. Might not have helped with your problem, but it won't hurt to do it! Ed
