klr overheating

While down in the Baja, a couple of weeks back, I found the KLR running pretty hot, especially at higher speeds, and in deep sand. Not to be unexpected, I thought, until I arrived home where it is definitely NOT hot, and there is no really deep sand, and the bike continued to run in the upper regions of the temperature gauge. In a quandary, I checked the fluid level (for the 10th time), the rad cap held 15 p.s.i., the pump impeller was tight, and there were no leaks. Finally, I pulled the thermostat, and it was stuck wide open! How can this be? The thermostat is stuck wide open, and the bike runs hot? My local repair shop guru explained that the coolant was flowing so fast through the system that it did not remain in the radiator long enough to cool off! I was sceptical, but he "unstuck" my thermostat, I re-installed it, and, like magic, the temp never rose past the 1/3rd mark, even after the bike sat and idled for 15 min.! A new thermostat is on order, and should solve my problem. Just thought my experience may be of value to some of you sometime. Murray Dochstader B.C. Canada. Hi all i need the group wisom for some heating problem. Yesterday the temperature gage went to the complet right realy near the H mark. Then goes back midway and so. I stop for a few minutes and when i started the bike the needle went in the normal position. Drive home with the needle near the H mard and sometimes in the normal position. Last night i chek the fan circuit, drain the coolant and chek the thermostat (on the stove) wife was not home... Everything was ok, put it all back and fill with good coolant. Start the bike and let it run a little bit to see if coolant was circulating in the radiator and the cooling circuit. Everything ok. This morning on my way to work same things happen. Could it be the thermostat going crazy?? Can the water pump impeller is loose?? broken?? Any idea?? Thanks in advance and sorry for my english, i'm a french Canadian with a Irish mother... Fran ois, you did a lot of good troubleshooting. I'm curious, though: Did the bike actually display any symptoms of overheating (pinging, reduced power, fan running constantly), or was it just the temperature gauge indicating high temperatures? I could be that the temperature sensor in the head is acting up, the gauge is malfunctioning, or the connection between the two is loose/broken/ grounding on something.

Your written English is excellent--better than many native English speakers I know. Congrats! -- Blake Sobiloff http://sobiloff.typepad.com/> San Jose, CA (USA)

Nope, that's it. I did the O-ring removal myself at first, but wanted a more robust seal than that provided by the diaphragm. (Mine had sprung a vacuum leak about a year after I rebuilt it.) As Bogdan mentioned, you can find a piece of gasket material and replace the diaphragm insert with it. I made the kit to provide a "cleaner" installation with a decent gasket. Krokko -- J.
