turn signals don't flash
Hey Now,
I went riding last night and found out that my turn signals don't flash. Worked on the bike
today trying to troubleshoot, but am limited in my knowledge of electrics and the KLR. I
read in a post a problem similar to mine, am wondering if it might not be a bad flasher? All
the electrics work fine. The bike starts, the lights are on (headlight/tail light), the turn
signals come on, but don't flash. I hear the flasher start to click, then the light just stays
on.
Is there a separate mechanism called a flasher ??? or
Is this the flasher relay mentioned in the Clymer manual under the gas tank???
I thought I read in a post where the flasher was under the fairing, how do I check this?
How do I check to see if the flasher relay is bad?
I don't own a voltmeter (bad me) should I go out and buy one? What should I look for in a
voltmeter for the KLR?
TUVMIA for any assistance

Just go buy a new flasher. Take a look at it, and find the same part under
the tank as per the Clymer manual. It is a $5 part, not worth the time to
troubleshoot.

It seems like mine did that once and I think one of
the wires was not in its plug good.

Make sure that both the front and rear signals are on. Also make sure that the lamp in the dashboard comes on. If any of those bulbs goes out, not enough power is pulled through the flasher to make it flash. _E>Hey Now, > >I went riding last night and found out that my turn signals don't flash. turn signals don't flash
Here's what I did....
My turn signals were turning on once, staying on and not 'blinking'.
I had the tank off anyway and followed the 'click' to the turn signal
relay which is a square black block under the main frame bar. I
noticed some rust on the contacts, so rubbed everything down with emery
cloth, put some dielectric grease on them and tried again. It didn't
fix the problem.
So, took the black casing off the relay and observed how the thing
worked. It looked like a electro-magnet was turned on casing a contact
to be made which in turn shorted the magnet, turned it off springing
the contact back which turned the magnet back on....again and again
thus making the turn signal turn on and off. With a little pressure my
finger allowed the system to function propery....somehow it was a
little out off adjustment. I bent the contact a little closer to the
magnet and this allowed it to function properly.
I'd suggest opening it up, plugging it back in and just seeing how the
thing works. I've dumped quite a bit of cash into my bike and just
didn't feel like adding more to the bill. I'd never seen a turn signal
relay before, had no idea how it worked etc., but it is a simple enough
system to look at and get an idea how it works.
Good Luck, hope I helped!!!

Do both the back and the front come on and stay on at the same time?
What does the dash light do?

turn signals don't flash
Hey Now,
Thanks to all who responded to help me out. I tried all the
suggestions. I determined that the turn signal relay was sounding funny
(lots of fast repeating clicks); took it off and cleaned the contacts
and used some dielectric grease - no change; took the cover off of the
relay and tried to clean internal contacts on the magnets - no change;
tried to monkey with the magnet lever - no change, broke thin wire,
relay really broke now ; went to local Kawasaki dealer and discussed
getting part, found out it was 37 bucks with tax! Whew, thought I would
just get the part number and order on line, felt guilty since the parts
guy was so helpful, went ahead and ordered from the local dealer; got
part last night and put it in with some more dielectric grease and IT
WORKS! Thanks again for all the help. Really appreciate this group.

Thanks Mark - fuses check good and headlight works so I'll check the starter relay, ignition lockout, cdi next.
Hope it's not the CDI.
