Howdy listers,
I have installed the Dual Star radiator guard (1) on my KLR. I rode
with a friend a couple of weeks ago and he had the Happy Trails
radiator guards (as in 2) on his KLR. Is a guard on the right side
necessary/desireable?

It's a convenient place to zip-tie the radiator shroud onto after you
break off the flimsy plastic tabs.
It also provides a slim amount of additional resistance to the reservior
getting bent back against the tank if you have a low-speed fall to the
left, or the shroud hooks a sapling. There's already a similar-size bar
behind the reservior.
I had the pair of happy-trails guards, then switched the radiator side
for the dual-star item. So I'm using both.

Depends... you ever fall on the right side ?
Worse case without the coolant bottle, you might manage a field fix to
get you home.
With no radiator chances are your walking, unless your buddy carries a
tow rope.

Looking for a good radiator guard. I also want to get some footpegs, so
I was thinking about going with the pdnerfbars. They seem like the total
package? Anyone have anything to say about them? If I need to do any
work on my bike do the bars need to be removed? How much better
protection do you get with the pd nerf bars compared to the normal
guards? Thanks in advance

There's a How-To in the FAQ, courtesy of me. Also, imagine the KLR
straight up in the air, coming down directly on the left side, and
picking it up and riding off. Yes, they're that strong. The foot
pegs are comfortable to stretch out on, and the added protection is
well worth it. But I'm biased. I got a keychain with mine!

perhaps the big IMS tank is the "best" radiator protection out there!

I have the DualStar........it looks a little beefier to me. Then again
you could get rad protection and more with the Happy Trails PD Nerfs if you
wanna go that far.
