got my 05!! front brake question
Picked up my 05 yesterday and took a nice ride. Trails, mud, gravel roads,
tight twisty paved roads, fast county roads.....I did a little bit of
everything, and Im VERY impressed!! It really does everything well. Thanks to all
that gave me advice and sold me on the KLR.
The one negative thing I noticed during the fast, twisty paved roads was the
lack front brake power...I read about it and was expecting it though. So,
besides a braided line...what pads are you guys using? Sorry if this has been
covered 100 times already...lol.
Also gotta get a set of serrated foot pegs...Them rubbers get slippery!!!!
Looking forward to doing some riding with some of the NJ/PA/NY members soon!

Front brake???? I didn't know it had one .......... heh, heh. Seriously
the braided lines will help and if you want to spend some bucks get a
larger MAP rotor or one of those new fangled wave rotors. I think Fred
at Arrowhead sells both.

I don't know that any pads are gonna make a difference. I tried the Galfer Green. They didn't work any better and last half as long as the stock pads. I am back to O.E.M. pads. You can get a bit more feel and a firmer lever by using a braided stainless line. The front brake on mine will lock the front wheel with enough squeeze so I just live with it. Oh yeah, the brake will get a little better as it beds in.

got my 05!! front brake question
Bill,
Glad you like your KLR. I'm using the DR650 springs with DR650 pegs.
Part number I'm using is:
09448-15008 Springs need 2 ea.
For the pegs the numbers are:
43560-44B10-019 Left need 1 ea.
43550-44B10-019 Right need 1 ea.
You might try www.ronayers.com as they have pretty good prices. Watch
out for the shipping costs.
Best,

got my 05!! front brake question
Bill:
Stainless Steel line, Galfer green pads in front ..
black in back. The MAP rotor makes a pretty big
difference. Also .. once you have fixed the brakes
you'll want to drop in some Progresive fork springs
because now your bike will stop so hard you'll pogo
stick the front end ... you will need stiffer springs.
Fred Hink has all the stuff you'll nedd as well as
sage advice.

The Galfer green pads for the front stop the bike a little quicker but they also wear out pretty fast. And several people (myself included) have reported manufacturing problems with both the front and rear Galver pads, e.g. mounting holes that aren't quite right resulting in a dragging brake unless the pad is carefully filed to the proper shape. Fred at Arrowhead sells the Dunlopad brake pads for the KLR. The HH rated ones for the front are _very_ aggressive -- they squeak my tires with a lot less pressure than the Galfers -- but seem to last longer than the Galfer greens, too. They do make a lot of dust. The back brake locks up too easily as it is so I have the normal, non-HH Dunlopads there and they work well. I got a noticeable improvement in braking performance when I reduced front end dive by installing the LR Progressive springs. Highly recommended. tachometer light?
By the way, I've tried to install an LED for my heated handgrips into the
extra indicator light on the right side of the dash, but the covering
appears to be blacked out. Has anyone figured out a way to use this space
for an additional light?
