Ken, I think the KLR has a 14 amp alternator. The conversion is amps times volts equal watts. So... 14amps x 12volts (if you're conservative) = 168 watts. If you aren't conservative use 14 volts for 14 amps x 14 volts = 196 watts. I'd use 14 volts as that's about the KLR charging voltage. Kathleen, I haven't done a test to see for sure... but... : ) I'd guess 1/2 of the available watts are going to running the bike for engine and existing lights. So you probably have 80-100 watts max to play with. I was on a fun ride this morning using my electric vest and heated grips. My charging indicator LEDs never showed I was pulling too much juice from the electrical system. I agree, I put driving lights on my nike from our local auto parts store. They look nice, and are bright, but they drain my battery BIG TIME. Is there any way to reduce the draw it has, I hooked mine up directly to the battery, with a on-off switch. It is fused. HELP? --- kenmuenster wrote:

Doug, JT, others with the same question - MY bad in an attempt at word economy while trying to raise awareness. Sorry for the confusion! I missed that '03 date after I picked up the thread from Advrider citing that ref: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=102982&highlight=moab The Blueribbon alert I mentioned pointed at the issue but it has been under the radar and escaped user attention until recently. The advrider comment noted that "The Moab office of the BLM put out the notice on October 1. The comment period ends October 30, 2005." As I explored futher, it appears that the revision of current permitting practices for organized permit-required jeep activities will be broadened to consider further restriction and narrowing of previously open access areas. While I agree that we need to avoid spoiling places by "loving-them-to-death." More the reason to have all sides fairly represented in meetings and during 'comment' periods, not just one side with big name law firms and consultants who lobby heavily and never miss a fine-print deadline. The sad reality: user groups are classically poorly organized (herding cats?) and generally apathetic with a compartmentalized approach to recreation. This BLM proposal seems to be a step away from that balance.
