It has been asked a million times and everyone hates the age old oil
thread that will never die, but.....
At what mileage can I convert my new KLR from regular cheap old
fashion oil to new high tech expensive synthetic oil???
This isn't an "can I covert to synthetic oil". For me the answer is
a clear 'yes'. The last KLR loved it.
Thanks,
Pat

I think once you are past the old 1000 mile break in period, the
synthetic stuff should be ok. I'm running Mobil 1 20w-50 since 1k
miles at 3500 miles, clutch is tight as new.

I went to Quacker State full syn. (I like the color) at 1000 miles. Now have 14000 on original everything with no problems.

I switched to synth at 500 miles. 7,000 miles later my A18 still uses
no noticeable oil between 2,500 mile changes. I never add a drop in-
between.

I am sure you could switch almost anytime. I just wanted it well broke in first. It isn't like a 3,000 mile engine is wore, so I figured it best to really let her set in.

I thought the Manual say to change it every 3000 miles. That's regular oil right?
Why change it sooner using Synth?

Frankly, I have three bikes and 2,500 is a number that satisfies all
three manufacturer recommendations and lets me remember one number
without having to look it up and keep written records. Such cheats
become more important as you get older

I've run a couple Blackstones on various bikes (but not the KLR yet)
using this same synth and I know I could probably extend the drain
interval, but changes are relatively cheap and I like to be good to my
bikes as they are one of my favorite things in life.
