temperature sending unit failure?

The temperature gage on my son's '90 KLR650 immediately goes to the maximum temperature indication as soon as you turn on the key. I checked the FAQ and could not find anything about this problem. This happens with the bike cold or at the normal operating temperature. The temperature sensor on top of the head reads 500 Ohms when the bike is stone cold. Is this correct? We don't want to buy a $30+ non returnable electrical part until we know it is the problem. I would appreciate any info you'all can provide since we don't have a service manual. Thanks for any help you can give, Greg

Should have bought a 2001.. Mine says Made in Japan on it... ;-) Pssst the bike is the same, the colors change year to year.... new models this year you get "2" two colors to pick from. Dooden A15 Green Ape (Made in Japan)
