Well we finished replacing my son Miles' dohickey on his KLR, manufacture date 8/91, 17000 miles. I posted a photo of what we saw when we opened the case before I touched anything inside. Wasn't bad at all and many thanks to Fred Hink for that, because when I ordered the dohickey kit I did not know enough to ask for a new tightened bolt and washer, which Fred recommended and we definitely needed. Ours was hash. Jury still out on when I do the one on my 2005 KLR, I'm waiting for Eldon Carl's report on the 2005 dohickey he recently removed. We were a little intimidated by all the different stuff we had read about this, but it turned out to be relatively easy. We did buy the right tools from Fred. I think they could be constructed, but it was easier to buy them. I don't dare tie up my shop for very long, so need to be able to finish what we start ASAP. I'm pretty sure the job could be done in about an hour, unless you are trying to clean up metal shavings like we were, and generally peeking around the inside of the engine (never found the little curve from the end of the broken spring). I mean about an hour if your dohicky was not broken when you got there. If any KLR folk are anywhere near Bonanza, OR (nearest town of size is Klamath Falls, OR) and need to borrow dohickey tools I may be able to help. Note to any doubters: Believe what you hear about that dohickey thing! Next on our learning curve is valve adjustments and oil screens! ........Linden
