I'm considering getting a KLR650 as a second bike. I know ride a '93 FJ1200. The KLR appeals to me as a very different ride... I live in Whitby, ON (just east of Toronto) and it takes at least an hour to get to some mildly twisty roads (like the 507). I'm somewhat spoiled from riding the roads around Boone, NC, in the annual FJ rally.

My impression is that this part of Ontario has good recreationally off-road trails, things like snowmobile trails that would be just right for a KLR. Is that right? For KLR owners in the GTA: where do you ride off-road?

Finally: I really like the blue ones

... which years besides '99 have that colour?

 Thanks for any info...

Bob, getting a KLR 650 as a second bike would be a huge mistake!! Don't do
 it!!!

Get the KLR as a first bike and keep the FJ as a second bike. That's going
to work much better for you. (VBG)

Really only 1/2 kidding here. You may find that you're like most of the two
or more bike KLR owners who find that the KLR is just more often ridden.

The KLR is a massive creature for real off road. Guys ask me if mine is a
serious off road bike and I tell them, "If you're of road, take it from me,
it's serious." Logging roads, many horse trails and such is duck soup. The
great thing about he KLR is that you can head off for a back woods run
without bothering about how much fuel you will need or how you will get it
back from the other end. Mine will go further on a tank of fuel on logging
roads than I care to ride in a day and comes and goes on the highway like a
 champ.

 Good luck with your investigation.

 Norm

If you have not seen it yet:

Shows each year, so you can see the color changes.

Warning... I had a FJ1200 and added a KLR 650 in the spring of 93' ... 6 months later the FJ was gone. KLR's just do that.

Now that I'm older and richer (LOL ), I have 4 bikes... because you can never have too many.

You can never have too many bikes. My father - in law always gives me
crap as to why anyone needs 3 motorcycles (one sport tourer , one dual
sport - KLR, and one dirt bike - old and neglected). I'd have 20 if I
could afford it. Lets see, ...hmm ....I got the sport touring, the dual
sport,, the old dirt bike (but I need a new trick one). I'd like to
have (don't laugh) a custom done my way, an antique bike of some sort,
a drag bike, a trials bike. All the old bikes I had that got away, a
Vespa (yeah I know its a scooter but a good one), my old BSA 250
single, a 250 Ducati single mid 60's, a Hodaka, a Penton Six Day, an H1
Kawasaki 500, a Triumph 750 twin. I really wanted an RD Yamaha 350 and
one of those 450 Ducati singles rigged up for road racing.

I have 2 boats and a sailboard that puzzles the same father - inlaw. He
plants flowers for a hobby. Go figure.

				Criswell,

 I've got a 450 desmo Duc..........in pieces right now.........makes a
better paint shaker than a road racer. Experience from when it was a
runner. Fun bike to kick start, left side kicker, 11:1 compression and all.

Once you catch the bug theres no telling how many bikes you'll end
up with. One of my MSF instructors had 7 in his garage and he was
no millionaire. If I won the lottery I'd get a Yamaha FZ1, a
Triumph Tiger and maybe a KTM 950 Adventurer Sport. The higher
you're sitting the more fun your having as far I'm concerned. The
FZ1 is relatively low but the versatility and Viper-stomping speed
 would be nice.

Criz,
I have one too, 450 desmo scrambler, in a basket. It's way down on my project list. Could
it be the bike of your dreams?

Those sure are good looking when they are restored. I sold my 250 to my
brother for $75 and he thought he got screwed (relatives). It always
ran great but there was an electrical problem which I have never been
too good at fixing. I have heard that same bike goes for $2500 to $4000
restored now. I never hesitate to remind my brother of that as he still
has the first nickel he ever made.

I'd keep the '93 FJ, add a KLR, a Honda Rune and a Ural w/side car.
