I don't think it's in poor taste, at all. What was poor taste was
the fuss made at the end of the race over the demise of the Big Guy,
with no mention of the "other" departures. I wonder how the families
felt about that ? To me, the death of any one participant is no
 sadder than any other.
But these folks know the risks...so I don't feel sad for them. I do
feel for the poor people in Iraq getting blown up by car bombs. Even
 the non famous.

I try to abide by the lists policy of "No personal attacks". Hence I
edited this part of my post.

You mean Fabrizio Meoni? I was unaware his name was "the Big Guy".

Of course it's no sadder than any other participant getting killed,
Steve. But had any of the other guys won the Dakar back to back?
Who do you think is going to get more publicity?

Thanks for your input, Mother Teresa.

 Thanks

Mother Teresa...hmmm...thanks...but not worthy. Let's get real about
the Dakar. Entertainment. Period. Take a hunk of money, equip to the
gills, roar around some 3rd world countries so you don't mess your
own up, knock down the odd cow, highlight some egocentric Nascar
chauffeur who seemed anxious to show his inability to be less than
number one, interview "the millionaire" ( Gilligan's Island ? ) and
then show deep sadness at the passing of one who took too many
risks, too many times. I don't knock the preseverance of the
competitors or their skill. But I reserve my respects for those
unfortunate enough to loose their lives from big waves or bombs, not
from something that is basically pointless. That doesn't mean I
don't enjoy it, but pardon me for not bowing my head with insincere
deep sorrow for someone who gave up his life and wife and kids to be
#1...again. Winning and fame are not my ideals in life.
 Sermons over...back to me brewsky.

Hey that's a good idea Steve, measure everyone by your yardstick.
You must be smarter than all those Europeans and Africans that enjoy the
 races..
I wonder where the term "The Ugly American" came from?
If you're different than I am, I treat you with contempt.
You obviously have no clue about the Dakar rally. I think it's be pretty
damn difficult to have a race that size in Europe, with the population
 centers, highways, and such.

Is this the first time you have ever watched the rally?
By your myopic perspective and inane comments, I would bet it is.

Huh? Maybe Mrs. Meoni married a professional racer in the first place,
 Steve.
Who are you to treat the man with less respect than any other person? You're
willing to enjoy it, but when a competitor loses their life, you just turn
your nose up? Wow, you are truly a man of character.

Does either the owner or moderator of this list enforce the rules?

The following is from the list's main page,

http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/DSN_KLR650/.

"Please adhere to the three following guidelines for the list:

 1. NO personal attacks. Keep "opinions" as objective discussions..."

If calling someone an "S. Head" is not a "personal attack" then I don't
 know what is.

Stu, why are you unsubscribing? Reason and intellect often don't work when
the adolescent mind kicks in. Sometimes only a hard jerk on their chain
gets their attention. Steve H. should be banned as well if that's the
criteria. He was personally attacking everybody who enjoys Dakar, and
respects the racers who attempt it. Obviously Steve has never raced, and
doesn't have a clue how hard it is.
