re-jet with super trapp?

I just purchased a new '04"KLR. I sure would appreciate help with a
direct question.
If I install a Super Trapp exhaust, do I have to re-jet? I did the
re-jet airbox thing on my DR and it was not worth the added "power"
and it ruined good gas milage.
I would like to add a Super Trap more for the weight saving effect,
but do not want to get into carb mods etc. (except for the fuel
screw adjust) Is it worth doing in the first place?
I sold my V Strom to get the KLR. Yeap! Just too many damn good
stories about how you guys like these things, and I know I will too!
Thanks,
JR

I dont have a supertrap. I think it depends on how many disks you put
on it and how much it free flows. If you have not done it already,
you need to open up the pilot mixture screw. that shouldnt hurt your
milage.

Your question - or something close - comes up regularly on this list, John.
The consensus is that it's not worth doing. Use your mod money for
suspension upgrades. Yes, you'll gain little in power and compromise your
gas mileage. The quality is often not great and you'll need to repack the
can. I personally don't think the weight saving is significant on a bike
like the klr. FWIW my experience is that if you install all the discs you
don't need to re-jet however the bike will run a tad lean. I would be best
to shim the needle a bit. Anyway, my SuperCrap/SupperTripe now sits on the
shelf.

About a month or two ago, you said that adjusting your pilot
screw "would" effect your milage, which it will.
Doing anything to change the mixture richer will effect the mileage.
Even the slightest little adjustment. I have been into my carb
dozens of times now, to rejet for an aftermarket pipe, and then again
to rejet for the stock can. Each time I go in I make one tiny
adjustment and then check everything. Mileage, idle speed, cruising,
top end, blah blah blah. Mileage is the one thing that will always
change with the adjustments.
I have also adjusted quite a few other bikes. Some stock ones a bit
richer for a little better response and cooler running, and some
other ones that have been adjusted so rich that they are down right
ridiculous.
It is VERY easy to jet the KLR too rich. The window for a finely
tuned carb is very small.

If you are looking for a bit more performance, as some folks have said you
are better off spending the money on suspension upgrades, that will be your best
bang for the buck.
having said that, like CA Stu recently rediscovered, an aftermarket pipe does
offer better pull off the low end so it does help. I converted to the Dynajet
kit at the same time I added a pipe and found the Dynajet recommendations
were spot on with the addition of the pipe.

Even CA Stu is not immune to the placebo effect. He also has been known to
be manipulated by women who likewise pull his low end.

If I did then I hust have forgot to hit the "not" key on my key board.
The first carb mod I did was drill out the pilot screw cover and
richen it up. At that time I didn't drill out the slide or put larger
main jets in. after riding around with just the pilot mod, I noticed
no increase in fuel consumtion. there could have been 1/2 mile less
but I dont pay attention to what on the right of the decimal when
calculating miles per gallon.
drilling out the slide reduced milage by 3 MPG. putting in 155 (???)
mains, knocked it down to almost 40 MPG

Geeeeesh what a pushover.... get a foot massage and gets stomped on....
Placebo effect.. hummm Cobra can gave me more low end grunt, at least
it seemed like it, but the NOISE was horrible... packed that little
sucker with just about anything non-flammable I could find...
Fiberglass insulation, Stainless Steel Wool... did'nt matter it was
LOUD !!
On the road is was bearable with ear plugs, but in the tight woods...
my my the echo was enough to take out fillings.
My opinion... keep the OEM can, de-tweety it when the time comes and
adjust the pilot circuit to the sweet spot right now, still need to
drill my slide, but will get there sooner or later.

I can confirm more low-end grunt with the supertrapp. I found I REALLY liked the power
for tight woods riding. Unfortunately one good dent in an IDS2 canister and it's rendered
un-repackable. And "quiet core" is a relative thing, I hated the noise it made, even through
earplugs on the highway. In the woods it was annoying after a while.
The stock pipe is quiet, indestructable, and gives a nice easy power that makes the bike
hook up real well in slippery stuff.
Spend your money on suspension. The bike will be more fun to ride with better
suspension.

Don't do it Ape Man !! Can't be undone. Will cut your mpg by a few with not
much power benefits. Others have regretted it.
