Today while removing my doohicky (after 17,000 miles) I found it to
be cracked on the bottom where it slides back and forth, and broken
on the top where it attaches to the engine. After a few swears, but
thankful looks skyward (I drove to Prudhoe Bay and back in July, now
I realize probably with a broken doohicky.) I started looking for
the missing broken off piece. I CAN'T FIND IT. I am noticing that
there is a hole in the bottom of the engine where I assume that the
oil runs to recycle itself (I am not a mechanic...) and I can only
assume that the piece that broke off went 'down there.' So, I am
trying not to panic, but what do I do???!!! Help please...

missing doohicky
Mine was in 4 pieces and my spring was in two!
I freaked too!
I went to Da Zone and got the lil $3 telescopin magnetic pickup tool.
I did alot of visual and found some of the pieces, but couldn't find
the spring hook, Damit!
I used the magnet tool and fished with it in the open area behind the
flywheel for and hour or two with a flashlight, without luck.
I resorted to bending the telescoping rod to fish to the right along
the bottom and finally found it.
I had only one more eighth inch chunk of the doohicky collar to find.
Searched for another hour or two without success.
Said F it and decided to put the left side together and just search
for the part in the screen on the right side.
As I was putting the left cover back on, I remembered seeing some
scratches on my flywheel.
What caused this, I wondered.
I unhooked the coathanger from the mag cover and tipped it upside
down and out it came.
Don't forget to check thoroughly inside the left cover and behind the
magnet plate!
Best of luck,
Rod

missing doohicky
You might have already discarded that bit of doohickey with your used oil during an oil change. It still my be in the bottom of the crankcase. Try fishing around with a magnet during the next oil change. It probably wouldn't hurt to go with a magnetic drain plug. There is also a screen on the left side of the engine where it may be.
Anyway, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it as if were gonna cause any damage it would have already happened.
