new klr fuel problem

My new KLR (California model) with just 600 miles on it just died in
traffic with no warning. It was after about 20 minutes of riding with
no problems, and only about 100 miles after I paid my dealer for the
500 mile valve check. It shows signs of serious flooding. I can only
get it running by opening the throttle wide open, and then can only
keep it running by keeping the throttle open some (it dies promptly if
I let it idle), and while it is running the carb overflows fuel
through the clear pink carb vent line. Any obvious or known problem
here? Is my carb float valve stuck open, or what? Can that happen on
a brand new KLR that's never been in the dirt?

Hmm that does sound like a float problem. Sure you could have an issue,
though it's not common.

Hi Bill
I had this happen to my A17 right after I acquired it
with about 400 miles on it. The PO had let it sit for
several months. I went to start it one day and fuel
was pouring out of the overflow hose. Put the bike
away for a day, tried it again and the problem
resolved itself. I am convinced it was crap in the
float needle seat.
I drained the float bowel and let a good bit of gas
run through it, filled it with Chevon HiTest and added
Gummout Carb cleaner. I have not had the same problem
since. I do believe that I still have a sticky
deceleration enrichment circuit since I still get a
good amount of popping on deceleration even after I
adjusted the pilot screw.
I plan to take the carb apart sometime in the future
to ensure that everything is clean/correct.

Obviously take it back to the dealer, and have them fix it.
Something as simple as a tiny bit of rubber scraped off the fuel line
during assembly, eventually ending up in the float bowl valve would
cause these problems.
There might also be problems with the California evaporative emissions
system, which I am not familiar with.

Yep, you got junk in the carb float valve, or you got a collapsed float.
Yep, that can happen to a brand new KLR. Yep, it's possible on a brand new
KLR, as junk in the tank (like paint overspray) flakes off and makes its
way down through the screen, or a defective float springs a leak and
sinks. Yep, the solution is to have the dealer a) clean the gunk out of
the float valve, b) make sure the floats are working and the float level
set correctly, and c) check to make sure that the screen over the tank
valve is in place to keep gunk out of the hose. You may also want to put a
fuel filter onto your bike, but beware that there isn't much head between
the tank and the carburetor, meaning you want a short squatty filter as
free-flowing and as close to the reserve valve as possible.
In short, it's happened to all of us, and the age of the bike makes little
difference, other than that on the KLR things like this tend to happen
early due to its poor build quality (things like screens improperly
installed, overspray in the tank, floats not adequately soldered or
adjusted, etc.).

Go get a can of Sea-Foam and add per directions.
Heck just read the can its amazing what it can be used in, I have seen
this stuff take some really sick running engines and make them idle
smooth.

I also use it as a fuel stabilizer, many times just add a ounce or two
to the tank or on small tanks 1/2 oz or so and run normally to help
keep the gunk at bay.

I bought some wrap around, sticky backed aluminized stuff from Fred (I
think) that has worked well with my Ortliebs. I further secured it with 2
large screw clamps. No, it doesn't look great, but nothing about the KLR
does.
