My A18 just passed 200 miles, and my riding schedule should go
through the next 300 in about 2 weeks.
I plan on doing the 500 mile service myself, and I was pseudo-
planning on doing the doohickey at the same time.
SO: might there happen to be anyone here who's around LA, has the
specialized doohickey tools, and would want to lend them to me in a
couple/few weeks?
I'd also happily accept some more experienced help! I'm good with
machines, and have a decent set of tools, but my experience is still
pretty lacking. Beer would, of course, be provided

I damn well better have a garage to do this work in; I'm moving
_tomorrow_ from my spacious downtown warehouse (that could've easily
hosted a wrench-fest. it is to be sad.) to a duplex in santa monica,
but I'll still have a private one car garage that's supposed to be
largely dedicated to being a workshop. Hopefully by the time I hit
500 miles we will've had a chance to get unpacked and organized
enough that it'll be useful.
Thanks,
erik

Erik,
I would be more than willing to bring my tools by and help you with
the replacement. There is also going to be a Julian Tech session
sometime around mid November which would afford you the opportunity
to work on the bike with the help of "many" technically advanced KLR
riders.

Erik,
We have tech days in Julian. Why don't you jam on down? We have
several sets of tools, and can help you through your first service as
well as the lever replacement, valve adj, etc. I think the next one
is mid Oct - I'll confirm date tomorrow.
All the best,
Mike

Thanks for the info, Mike. (and scott!)
After mapquesting julien, calling you f'ing crazy for thinking the
oregon border is a "jam on down", then mapquesting julian and seeing
much more familiar san diego... i'll just have to see if the timing
works out for me and the significant other who is both better
connected with reality than me and convinced we'll be swamped through
october with setting up our new place.
If not, perhaps I'll have to take Scott up on his offer.
(i'd also like to take this time to apologize for not being able to
keep my political responses from polluting this fine list. i'll keep
my fingers in check in the future, i promise!)
Thanks again,
erik

Next Julian Tech Day is scheduled for November 13, 2004. It's after the
Election, so we don't have to put the other side on the outside (of the
shop, that is).

I'll add my name to this list.
I am part of the current World Doohickey Replacement Speed Record
team, have the tools, and wouldn't mind visiting Santa Monica.
I dig the English shops there, reminds me of my boyhood in Jolly Old
England, where I would raid the sweet shops for Curly Wurlys and
Smarties....
I'm free for a road trip most Sat, Sun, and Mondays. Let me know.
Cheers

Thanks Stu!
Kings Head is a pretty quick jaunt from my place, and there is what I
believe to be an Irish pub all of 2 blocks away. I'll probably know
better once I actually live there.
...that is, of course, what you meant by "English shop", right?

Mike says Julian tech day in Oct. MarkB says Nov. i would like to
make it to one or the other of the tech days, A17 SLSM (Street Legal
Sewing Machine) is rounding the 9000 mile corner and is probably in
need of a doohickey. If someone could E-MAIL me the dates, i will
plan a weekend of it. supplying some beer of coarse (right PAT?)

Pat introduced me to an ATV/motorcycle lift at the end of the ESR 2004 ride
,which is foot operable and has a safety lever to retain lift in the event
that the hydraulic system fails, and Devon brought up the very usable 12-ton
press, both from Harbor Freight. I just placed my order w/ Harbor Freight
for both, and they were at a good price - The 1500 pound capacity ATV/Cycle
lift (item #2792-4VGA
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=2792> )
was $59.99 and the 12-ton shop press (item # 1667-1VGA
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=1667> )
was $79.99 - I used coupon codes from
http://billt.com/harborfreight.htm for
additional savings and free shipping.
