front wheel torque

I just replaced my front tire for the first time (9000 miles on
original front tire with tread still left...), I torqued it up to
the book value (58 ft lb) and it seems wayyy too tight, wheel won't
spin freely at all.
What does everyone else use, on cars I always tightened up till it
binded then loosened till it was just slightly draggy.
Any Ideas?

I have always used 58 ft. pounds without a problem.
Are the brake pads positioned properly in the caliper?
When you put the front wheel back on did you
reassemble the speedometer drive and collar correctly?
I would pull the wheel and look over everything very
carefully before I rode the bike.

Make sure the speedometer pickup is aligned with the flange on the
wheel! My bike's DPO apparently forgot to do this THREE TIMES breaking
off all of the flange. If it is aligned then putting the recommended
torque + whatever it takes to make the hole line up should not
interfere with the wheel spinning.

If everything is lined up properly, the front wheel nut puts no pressure
on the bearings no matter what -- it pushes on a flange, not on the
bearings. So if it isn't spinning properly, make sure everything is
assembled correctly. I probably have more like 65 ft lb of torque on my
front wheel (i.e., 58 ft. lb, then whatever is required to move the crown
of the nut so I can put the pin in!), and the only drag is from the front
brakes.

Thanks for the speedy replys.
I "thought" I had the speedo in right
and since the "manual" doesn't make any
notes on re-assembly I figured it was
something else.
Straightened the tabs flat, put'er back
together and everything is great.
Thanks again,

Ed,
there normaly is a bit of drag from the front brakes. Do you have them on
then you try to spin the tire?

I had a dirty caliper which will make it drag or stick.

You just have to be faster than the average bear chasing after a picnic
