Hi this is my first post.
 I have just purchased a 2001 KLR650
and would like to remove the back wheel
how do you do this with a side stand?

 Thanks

Put a prop / floor jack under the other side of the frame, opposite
the kickstand. Or use the old standby; some elbow grease, a milk
 crate, and some 2"X 4"s.

Your best bet is to invest in a bike/ ATV jack for about $100 US from
Sears, Sam's Club, Costco, whoever. They're pretty ubiquitous these days.

Piece of cake, 5 min with the hacksaw and a file or 1 min with the
dremel/grinder. The instructions have a template and its easy.

For either the front or the rear I like to bring the bike into the
garage where I have some lights, and use a ratchet strap or two
tossed over the rafters in the garage (unfinished garage). Attach
the ends of the rathchet straps to the handle bars for the front or
the rear rack for the back wheel. About five or six cranks with the
rathcet strap is all it takes, pretty fast too. The bike can tip if
a lift is used down low, in which case you probably want to use
straps to steady the bike anyway.

So I like the straps, worst it does is swing a bit to and fro.
Rather peaceful actually. I have never tried to ride the bike
however while hanging and I dont recommend it.

A motorcycle jack is such a handy accessory for a KLR.

Last weekend I saw a MC jack listed for $60, I paid about $70 for
mine. This is of course a cheap Chinese made item but perfectly
adequate for a KLR size bike.
