Has anyone tried to mount the JCWhitney "Custom Travel Trunk" on your
KLR luggage rack. Seems like an outstanding piece of luggage, if it
works. Great place to keep your helmet and removable when you don't
want it in the way. Probably not too durable. Looks like mounting
plate is a good fit. Good price, though ($54.50). You can see it at
http://www.jcwhitney.com/productnoitem.jhtml?CATID=123208 (sorry,
couldn't figure out how to cut & paste pic or attach jpg???)
Thanks

I've had the Whitney travel trunk on the KLR for four months or so. The mount
is a great fit on the rack and makes use of existing holes but you shouldn't
use the screws it comes with to install it, use store-bought countersunk
screws instead. The supplied screws do not fit flush and the box won't go on
properly. The box is sturdily made and goes off easily by unlocking, goes
back onto rack with no key at all. Holds a good bit of stuff including any
full-face helmet. Looks like factory option. Recommend it to anyone.

Nice find Gary, I would use it in second. It doesn't look like it has an O-ring to seal the lid, but I could live with that. I pack everything in garbage bags anyway to keep out the dust/grime/water and to pack out the trash. Looks like medium or light weight ABS, not too sturdy, I wouldn't think it could take a rapid-gravity-pull (crash) very well.

Eric asked:
Does it take up much room on the seat to where it would interfere with a
passenger? It looks blow-molded so does it have much interior wasted space?
How secure do you think it is?
The JC Whitney travel trunk is made for EMGO by another company whose
name I don't recognize. If you bolt the mount as it looks like it was
intended through its chamfered holes into four holes on the KLR's rack the
box ends up about even with the trailing edge of the seat. My five-foot-three
wife thinks it cramps her sitting behind my own five-foot-seven body. I
suppose you could bolt the mount further back but it would lose the
"factory-fit" look and might affect the handling with a heavy load in it.
The interior has little wasted space.
The box is sturdy, seals well, and looks to be about as secure as the
Krausers I've had on Beemers.
If it cost twice as much it would still be a good deal.

The mount
Could this trunk be mounted on the sides as well using Happy Trails
SU racks?

Just recieved travel trunk from JCWhitney (see
http://www.jcwhitney.com/productnoitem.jhtml?CATID=123208). Mounting
bracket fits tight over luggage rack. Front two holes match
perfectly and I drilled two 1/4" in the back for a secure mount.
Trunk snaps on & off bracket easily, and rubber grommets prevent
rattle. Luggage rack still fully functional with trunk removed (only
have to find another place for tool pouch). Perfect place for small
items when you want to run errands on bike (had to use a cardboard
box when I went to cycle shop to get oil & filter), and water proof
place for helment. Can detach and carry case with built-in handle if
you don't feel good about where you're bike's parked. $54.50 well
spent. Won't survive an inverted skid on pavement, but is every bit
as sturdy as the rest of the stock green plastic on the bike
(fenders, farings, skid plate, etc.) Made by EMGO, but looks like a
factory option. Two thumbs up.

I'm looking for the travel trunk from JCWhitney that detaches.
Is this link the one or is there another one?

It's cheaper and I don't think the one you saw has a
quick-release plate.
I also use it under the bash plate to lean the bike over and
keep the rear wheel off the ground, for lubing the chain.

You do not want this trunk. It is junk. Flimsy, not weather tight, and not removeable.
The one Devon mentionned is of higher quality plastic, is sealed from the weather, is removeable, and it's cheaper!
