I wouldn't know. It will suck 10 years from now when there's NOWHERE left to ride offroad thanks to selfish jackasses like you. Here's a tip- the KLR is slow. Now yours is slow and loud. Must suck spending over a grand (CA$) for performance mods you could have gotten with a $15 KLX650-R needle and a $10 hole saw for the airbox. FWIW the reason I jumped all over you about this, is that you said NOTHING about a spark arrestor, just that you were using a race pipe in the woods. And the last thing trail riders need are more people with stupidly loud bikes. Seriously- because of your exhaust "upgrade", nearly everyone you drive by will have less regard for motorcyclists. You may not care about their opinion now, but come election time it will be pretty damn important. Second thing is your money would have been MUCH better spent doing further performance mods, as you got a small taste of with the Progressive springs. Devon

i agree with devon about the pipe. i also bought ( wasted money ) on the big gun race pipe. sure it sounds good ( but loud ). and it looks great. the only diff. i noticed is a little quicker throttle response which i feel is more from the jetting and fine tuning than from the pipe. iam going to put the stock pipe back on but with the big gun header ( just because it looks great ). and his opinion on the woods riding with this pipe is also a point i agree with not to mention the fact that a pipe w/out a spark arrestor is a danger to our woods. when i bought my pipe i didnt realize it would be so loud when you are pouring on the gas. anyway good luck with your bike and whatever u do to it i just thought id let u know how i feel since i have the pipe also. scott

I'm with Devon. Loud pipes piss people off. Enjoy your sport without making everyone else pay for it. Living in close proximity to other poeple requires showing some respect for their "space". I think the (para)phrase "Your right to swing your fist stops at the end of my nose" applies here. Seriously, I thought he was riding offroad without a spark arrestor. That would indeed qualify for "jackass" status at the minimum. Offlist I would use stronger language. BUT, it turns out that Kent was indeed being responsible about the spark arrestor, and for that I must apologize for calling him a Jackass. I'll downgrade it to "knucklehead" for spending all that money on a stupid noisemaker that makes everyone else's life more difficult to some degree. Sell the damn thing on Ebay (to someone in South America if possible) and spend the money on a new rear spring, or for cartridge emulators. If you want to go fast offroad on a KLR, you need more suspension more than you need more motor. Devon

Well I will throw my two cents out here. 1. Loud pipes do not save lives. 2. You need a spark arrester. However, the way to win someone over to your point of view, which I assume you are trying to do because you appear to feel strongly about it, would, in my opinion, not be by publicly insulting them. Rather, your points would probably have been better received had you merely, with logic and persuasion, explained that running an off road bike in wilderness areas with out a spark arrester should be avoided at any cost since it endanger's the wilderness and those who are out there. Additionally, loud pipes, while they may be pleasing to the ear of the owner and some others, are generally looked at by those who are not motorcycle enthusiasts, as a perfect example of what they think of as inconsiderate behavior, and is used as an excuse to oppose all motorcycles, on or off road. Well, I have been following this thread with much interest. It's not that I haven't heard all of this stuff before, but I have been doing alot of thinking about just this subject. I have been doing more off roading lately and am planning on doing alot more. For those of you that don't know, I have had the Laser Pro Duro race version on my bike for the last 24,000 miles. While I was out riding at the NOAB and especially this last weekend out in the Sierra's I was more and more nervous about noise levels and tickets. Out on the street I have loved my Laser's sound and flawless performance. But since I'm setting up for more off road adventure's I want knobbie tires. They will rub on the Laser. I want to be quieter. The Laser race version isn't. I don't want to be illegal which adds worry to my ride. The Laser is not USFS approved. Since the only other exhaust that I know of that's legal, quiet, allows the use of knobbies without rubbing, AND stays together for tens of thousands of miles is the stock exhaust, I'm putting one on. I already talked to another fellow KLR rider out here today and he happens to have one that has been sitting in his garage for a number of years. He said that I could have it. Lucky me. This might be remedied by a torch and a hammer. But the bottom line is it isn't usfs approved. I also think the stock pipe has more useable low-end power. Most of the "low end power gains" people get from fitting a pipe and jet kit, in my opinion, are from drilling the slide vacuum port and fitting a different needle. The stock pipe gives the most useable, controllable power which is what you need offroad anyway.

This was the big one for me- something that sticks out as far as the Laser will get hit with trees and rocks pretty often. The stock exhaust, besides being tucked in better, can take a bigger beating than ANY aftermarket pipe I've seen. I've followed this thread with interest as well. First, because I want to give Devon an atta boy for speaking out against loud pipes and second because Devon came back and stuck to his guns while toning down the rhetoric. And last, because Keith finally put this all into perspective - when folks like Devon rail against loud pipes we are trying to get you to contemplate your decision to force others to enjoy your noise. A very famous American once said, 'If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen', and that is what we are trying to do, raise the level of the heat so you must make that decision.
