Hi, I am about to change my oil, and was considering putting Walmart's
brand, Supertech, in my 2002 KLR 650. What do you guys think of this
oil? Is it ok to use, or should I get a synthetic or synthetic blend?
Thanks,

If it has friction modifiers (ie it claims improved fuel economy) then
it can sometimes make a clutch that is already marginal start slipping.
I've heard this but never seen it in practice.
I use expensive oil in my air cooled SR500s, since they're harder on oil
and only get a change once a year or so. The KLR gets Delvac 1300, or
Castrol GTX20w50, or whatever's handy and cheap.
Most important thing is that you have enough oil in the motor.

I use Supertech 20W50 in my woodsbeater 'cause the oil doesn't stay
in there that long anyway.
I use Chevron or Havoline 10W40 dino in my other bikes.

I've been using Rotella T 15W-40 Heavy Duty Dino ($7/gallon) @
wallyworld the last 7000 miles. No clutch slippage, 55mpg on
highway, miniscual drop in sight glass between 2000 mile changes.
The zinc & phosphorous numbers are higher than any oil I've seen.
There are no friction modifiers in this oil. I have a gallon of
Rotella T 5W-40 heavy duty synthetic (no fricion modifiers) on
deck for next change (12.88/gallon and same high zinc and
phosphorous numbers).

Damn, this oil thing always comes up

It is not just the friction modifiers: it is also the reduction of materials
in the oil that is at issue.
I prefer the JASO MA synthetics after break-in, but then again, I may have
made the mistake of reading about the SH oils, and such. (Harhar)
Oil threads - how about another thread on grease?

Joking - My KLR is in better shape than I am, but maybe, just maybe, my
&*#$(@#) ankle will be cleared to ride in short order.
In the mean time, I will follow the science and use JASO MA synthetic oil
for our wet-clutch shared-oil ride.

Nobody disputes that you are acting on very sound theory. The question
is, will it make any difference over the expected life of the bike? The
"average" rider changing the oil at the recommended intervals, will that
shorten the life of the engine?
Will someone smash open the case at 50mph on a rock and totally waste
all that slow-wearing synthetic oil?

I've ran delvac 1300 in my '04 since I got it in oct '03. The oil
would usually turn pretty black after 1K miles. Last change at 3500
miles I put Mobil 1 red cap in it. Now the oil has over 2K on it and
it's barely darkened at all.
Does this prove that synth is better than dino? I don't know but I do
like what's happening.

If you're going to Wal-Mart to pick up the oil, just buy the big gallon
bottle of Rotella or Delvac or Delo 15W-40 instead. These oils are well
suited to use in your bike and are much higher quality than generic
car oil (or most name-brand car oil, actually).
And they're *cheap*.

The best cheapest cruise is the bungie cord type found
here:
http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/oCy2QBIiVz4ivSbYvQNNr7xwEKm4-EkPQ0LqDDpc5C7D8qPdDQn2wHB0nDrGMjYamxDMnLcfxqHayUcIg2tOkE043w/throttlelock02.jpg
If the link doesn't work, it's in the files section of
the group web page. Vista cruise's work good util you
drop your bike in the dirt. Then they snap right off.
