this morining I was riding on the freeway about 75 mph when the KLR
motor locked up. made some funny noises like a (cam?) chain breaking
some teeth. and a few loud knocks (valves hitting piston?). I thought
I ran over something and it got stuck in my drive chain. than the
front tire started to shake, so I thought I ran over something and
got a flat. But after I stopped the tires were OK and there wasn't
anything wrong with the drive chain. The starter just clicked. The
oil level was above the sight glass. I had to walk home to get my
pickup truck than I had to lift it in the back because I didn't have
a ramp. the KLR is heavy, even with an empty tank. It's still in the
back of the truck because I haven't figured out how to get it out.
Maybe I'll just drop the tail gate and hit the gas. I have gravity on
 my side this time

I think there is about 44,000 miles on the bike. I dont remember
 right now.

That really sucks.. Did the rear wheel lock up at 75 mph? Can you
take off the left side covers & take a pic of the doohickey & chains
 before you dump the bike?

Damn shame about the motor. You got my nomination for tuff guy of
KLR crowd, any man dead-lifting that sumbitch into a truck bed is
tuff. I knew Stu could toss KLRs into pickup trucks all day
long, but I thought he was a quirk of nature.

Did you notice if the cam cover was fractured or leaking?

Take digi pix as you pull the covers off, we want to see what the
damage is, and maybe somebody here has some insight or a line on
 good spares for the rebuild.

 Sorry for your bad luck,
 MarkB

I only lifted half the bike at a time. First the front wheel and then
the rear. I dont want to do it again

No I didn't look to much. I didn't notice anything. I will check
 tomorrow

I will.

I was lucky that I didn't go on a long ride with another group today.
I would have been stuck in the middle of nowhere. I did figure
something out that may/will help in the future. Since my AAA card
doesn't work for motorcycles. If I break down I will rent a U-haul
truck one way to get it home. Its cheaper than a tow truck which is
about $200. Thats what I would have done if I couldn't get the bike
in the back of my truck

44 K is relatively high miles for a KLR and thus could be alot of
things. However, pieces of a wayward doohickey getting jammed
 somewhere do come to mind.

It wasn't the doohickey (Eagle). It's still there. I didn't get to
see the spring because I didn't pull the rotor.

Is is possible that it was what I think of as a classic seizure,
where the piston gets stuck in the cylinder due to heat
 expansion?

I don't even know if this really does happen on *any* engine, so
this may be a pretty ignorant question.
