oil change - too much oil?

I have several KLR's and they all do this. I set the bike level, held up from above by tie downs from the roof. I drain the oil, replace filter, the refill the crankcase. I will fill to the middle of the sightglass, run the engine once. usually fill quite abit more to the same spot. Run and check again. All looks good. Then I run around the block, check it and it still looks good. Then I put 30-40 miles on it and its over the top of the sightglass. It looks like it has too much oil in it. I used to go back and dump some out but have just left it this time. Has anyone else noticed this or am I doing something wrong? I dont want to blow any seals or anything but also want to have as much oil as possible in it. Any comments anyone?

I like the KLR sightglass location, it lets you know when you need to add
oil and that's what counts. One time I refilled with only two quarts, after
ridding and then setting on the centerstand all night, the level was in the
middle of the glass, so then I knew it needed a pint to be full.
I always refill with 2 1/2 quarts, never blown a seal, and I don't believe
there is any danger of it either.

Ken,
When I bought my 03 KLR used a few weeks ago the oil level was at the
bottom of the sight glass. I figured it was ok since that's the way it
was with my XT350 too. I rode it about 60 miles and did an oil change.
I almost always measure the oil I put in the engine and put the 2.5
liters in like marked on the side of the case. I don't know that I ever
did see the top of the oil level when checking it. A week later I did
another oil change since I'd ridden 1,500 smiles and I measured what came
out and what I put back in. I got about 2.3 liters out of the engine
best as I could tell. I figured that was good since the engine was still
being broken in and I'd been riding it hard while in Texas. I guess next
time I do an oil change I'll only add 2.0 liters and see just where that
level is on the sight glass. Then I'll add 0.5 liters to put it right.
Best,
Jeff Saline

Hey, when you're checking your oil level, you ARE doing so with the
bike vertical right? If you check it on the sidestand you're not
going to see much oil. A measured 2.5l put my level well above the
glass, if I could see the top of the level in the glass, I'd be adding
some.

Yes the bike is on level ground and is prefectly vertical. What I dont understand is how you can end up with more oil. In either case, I am not putting more than 2.5l so I dont think its enought to blow a seal. Thats what I was worried about.

I did notice it took quite a big angle to both sides to get the oil
that was 'hiding' in the case to drain. I leaned the bike on the lift
hard to either side about twice to get most of it out. It was a
pretty large quantity in there after the initial draining was done. A
good half pint I'd estimate from all the kitty litter I needed to
clean up after I was done making a mess of the place. Still more in
the filter housing...which is the reason for the shiny clean streak on
that side of the motor.

While I might wish for more, it doesn't strike me as odd about the rebadging
of various models as that was part of the plan from day one. They had always
planned to share models as a way of filling out the holes in each other's
lineup. The surprise this year has been the new 250 four stroke MX: a Suzuki
designed engine in a Kawasaki designed frame. It may be the same bike rather bought
with yellow or green plastic, but it is a new model that is the result of
joint engineering. I hope its the sign of more to come with new models.
