All (listers? friends? what is the proper salutation to the list?)
Because I have been obsessing about a getting a KLR ever since I joined
the list, I finally went out and saw one up at Battley Cycles in
Gaithersburg, MD... They're not a Kawi dealer, but a BMW, Harley,
Truimph, Duck, etc. dealer who happened to have a 99 KLR that someone
traded in. This was the first time that I have met a KLR f2f and I was
quite impressed by it. I *liked* the 9" of suspension (never had that on
my R65!) in fact I had a dream later that night about where precisely I
could go with all that travel ... I liked the thumper, simple,
reliable, and no problem syncing the carbs. BUT as the bike was a trade
in, it had a corbin seat on it. It had to be the most AWEFUL seat I have
ever sat on. It was flat and wide, with a slight dish for the entire
length of the seat, and very steeply slanted in the direction of the
tank. I couldn't imagine having to sit on that seat for more than 5
seconds... I would slide down the seat and smash my cahones into the
tank without trying and that was just sitting on it. So is this the
dreaded "other" corbin that I have seen in the FAQ's?
On another note, the bike was immaculate, 1600 miles, with the corbin
and the kawi tank bag/bra as the only mods that I could find on the
bike. They wanted $4000 for it, but I have seen it sitting there for
several months (I think since early March) so any ideas what a resonable
price might be for it? If I do end up purchasing it, is there a source
for stock seats or someone who actually likes that awful thing they call
a seat?
Any advice on the pricing would be mucho appreciated. Also, if anyone
in the greater Mid-Altantic states has one for sale, I would be
interested in hearing about it off list.
Thanks,
Zack
P.S. Met a guy at Battley who had just arrived on an 86 KLR. I stopped
to ask him what he thought about it... "Came here on some good twisty
backroads and my friend on his Ducati 996 couldn't lose me" and he was
fully knobbie shod to boot!

I think is time for Kawi to include an impact wrench in the KLR's
tool kit.
