Hello.
I purchased a 1999 KLR650 last year and now I'd like to paint it. The
plastic parts have many sun spots and are really faded.
the tank is a 25 liter plastic IMS tank which is stock white.
I'm thinking of painting it a glossy black.
any suggestions on what to use and methods? (preferably something
that is available in Montreal, Canada)
on a seperate issue, anyone know of any aftermarket front fenders?
(something that will look more like a BMW GS or KTM beak.)
thanks
Danny

I think the IMS tank is made from polyethaline (sp?) "tupperware". If
it is, then it wont be easy to paint, if the paint sticks at all.

Krylon just came out with a plastic paint. Has anyone dared using it?

Danny, here's a website that should give you the basics:

Krylon's Fusion paint is supposed to be the stuff to use on plastic, if
you're looking for a more simple way to get the painting done...

The IMS tank will be nearly impossible to paint, so your best bet is
to just clean it up and leave it. The plastic used on Japanese dual
sports is very flexible and soft and again, without mixing up a
special brew of paint with lots of flex enhancers, your looking at a
lots of work to paint and maintain a glossy look.
If it were my project, I would go for something that would be very
easy to keep up, like some of the more popular semi gloss colors. I
just finished painting my project SRX-6 a semi flat gunmetal metallic
(bought in spray cans at Auto Zone) and the people who see it ask
what shop did the paint job. These finishes are sinfully easy to
apply, easy to touch up and maintain and very inexpensive.
As for the front fender, make your own. I had a customer who cut the
rounded tip off of a plastic street bike fender, trimmed it and
painted it black and bolted it to the front of his white plastic
Acerbis Baja Fender with some black nylon bolts. Looked very sharp.

Well I have yet to try it but I found this quote on a randome site
"Popular Mechanics, in their review of this product, claimed to have
painted a plastic garbage can with it. If this can be believed, it
means that this stuff will stick to almost anything. "
I saw a few other reviews and it looks promising. I think I might
give it a try myself, I plan on getting all the sticker graphics off
my 03 klr in a week when I have time so might try and paint the rear
fender on the underside since its dirty all the time anyway , if the
paint sucks no one will notice

I wouldn't expect it to stick to the gas tank for long, because one of
the few reported problems with it in any of the reviews I've read is that
it's highly soluble in gasoline even when dry.

The 250 comes stock with 15T/44T gearing on a 17" wheel.
After a couple of hours of web research and paper catalog (DK, Chap, etc.)
scanning I've only been able to find stock gearing replacements or
selections that will make things taller. I need to go the other way.
Anyone have suggestions for a possible supplier?
