Just did a 98 motor into a 95 frame not to long ago. Went well enough. I had the bike on a sears atv lift. Grabbed the motor by hand and put the motor in from the left side. I used two half used rolls of paper towels as a bumper pad. One at the bottom of motor and one at the top between head and frame downtube. Hey it fit well... Two 15,18 inch line up/roll bars came in handy. Started the rear motor mount bolt first( in linkage area) not the swingarm bolt. Be careful where and how you pry on the motor casings to get bolts lined up. It would be easy to punch a hole through a case. A Brass punch set would be handy. Sears sells a three piece by Mayhew that does all my KLR bearings good. Lots of PB BLASTER penetrating oil would be good for the swingarm bolt. And as recommended by Devon; new BOLT and bearings. Don't expect to get this bolt out in one day... Links (dogbones)on the swingarm appear to be side specific. Maybe somebody can confirm. YMMV.

That year KLR sold for $2899 plus tax/fees back in '89, marked down from $3200. I know cause I bought one. That bike is sweet though, I'd love to have a mint '89 with no miles for a showpiece. I wouldn't be suprised if he gets $2700 for it. 89-90 are good years for the KLR IMO. It looks clean, but 400 miles and never registered? I'd rather drop $2500 on a '97 with low miles. Those deals can be found easily. Don't forget, this "mint '89" has 14 year-old tires, tubes, battery, crankcase oil, fork oil, brake fluid, squirrels nest in the airbox and the bike would most-likely require a carb teardown & tuneup, assuming the bike wasn't stored shrinkwrapped with all the fluids drained. I'd pay $1,800 tops for it. I paid $1,200 for my '90 Tengai (pristine & with 7000 miles) back in '97. Mark B2 A2 A3

You are probably right - this whole process is driving me nuts. Most folks would take their time - but my wife's opinion is kind of like the Shuttle launch window. I need to buy while the wind is in my favor (besides, I just sold my XT yesterday). Hopefully I wont catch much heat here - but I found a 2001 DR650 with 700 miles on it an hour from my house. Going to look at it today. Anyone own both - or have ridden both and can compare/contrast? Cheers, Sean

Don't have both, but like the DR650, it seems "alot" smaller than a KLR when standing next to it.. I thought it was a 250 or something until I noticed the "650" on it..... Dunno if I would want to ride 2-up on a DR, but when wrestling the KLR through tight stuff I am wishing it was a DR or XL..
