strange engine noise

All,
I have a 2002 with about 1200 miles on it and I just started hearing
a
strange noise coming from the engine. Now, let's see if I can
describe it. It is an intermittent noise that is not there when
sitting still idling. In fact, I don't even hear it when revving my
engine (also, when sitting still). However, under load when
accelerating, I hear something that sounds almost like a small piece
of metal being thrown around in the engine. It's not a "hard" sound
like maybe nut or screw would make but like a very light piece of
metal. The sound is a faint rattling "ting" and sounds as if it is
coming from the left side of the engine. I hear the sound from
around
2k to 4k rpms, again only under load. I hate asking questions like
this since it is almost impossible to answer without hearing it but I
thought that someone might have some insight. I would hope to have
an
idea of what it might be before the sound drives me crazy and I tear
the engine apart trying to track it down.
Oh, I also did my 500 mile valve adjustment about 200 miles ago (a
little late). Three valves were at the low end of the tolerance
range
and one was below tolerance. I adjusted all to the upper end of the
range.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Have you adjusted the balancer chain ? (doohickey)
There are a few web pages that describ in detail how to adjust.

Sounds very much like you are describing "pinging" or "predetonation" caused
by an overly lean mid range especially since it happens under load in the rpm
area that is jetted very lean on stock carb jetting. I also had some pinging
like this and after turning the pilot screw out to 2 1/4 turns and shimming
the needle jet .0020" it went away. If you are burning regular gas try a
higher octane and if the pinging goes away you have found the problem.

Thanks Kurt, that's one thing I didn't think about. I will
definitely
put in premium to see if it goes away. If it does, I will do the
pilot screw adjustment.

Sorry, I didn't mention that. Yes, I adjusted the balancer chain the
same time I did the valve adjustment.

I had a rock bouncing around on top of the chain at the counter shaft
sprocket, sort of lodged in the area between the chain and the case. Maybe
a half inch rock, no damage.

I wonder if its because of detonation and bad gas like pinging? Could it be
from changing some combustion parameters during the valve adjust?

Hey Cool: Try adjusting the the timing chain tension. It is a very
simple thing to do. Just remove the rubber cover and expose the bolt
head lower left side of engine case. Loosen the bolt no more than 2
turns, tap it a few times and tighten it. If this adjustment is not
attended to for too long, it can cause terrible problems. I hope this
advice is correct. It's the first time I have ever advised anyone on
the mechanics of the KLR. I am not a mechanic. Those that are can
confirm or correct what I have said. Good luck.

This is the same thing that my 02 KLR with 1700KLM on it hase been
doing.
except that my seems to start after I've gone down the highway for
about 15-20KLMs and done some trail riding.
I've adjusted the balancer chain and it still continues, I'm
wondering if this could be a symptom of "doohicky desease".
But for now I'm going to try useing some primium gas and see how
that goes.

Go to the archives and do a search on Mysterious Squeak. To me it
sounded like a squeak but my buddy who actually diagnosed the problem
described the sound as a marble in a glass jar. The sound really does
seem like it's comming from the left side of the engine but in our
case the fairing was redirecting the noise and the culprit was
actually the headlight assembly.
Give this a try and let us know if it helps.
