Just fitting a new spring will help sagging, if you have fatigued the OEM spring. Since a Progressive spring is cheap, you might as well try one. Especially if you find yourself riding with the preload set on 4 or 5, you might really benefit. But part of the problem is the 15,000mi old fluid inside the shock. If it doesn't leak, look into having it recharged. You can save money on this by removing the shock and bringing it down to the shop yourself. Make sure the shop has worked on a KLR shock before, or at least make sure they know that the spring is 2" longer than it's installed length, and the gas charge fitting is recessed. An adaptor can be made with a metal valve stem extender, just punch out the core. I got a Progressive 420 shock- it's a minor improvement over a stock shock with fresh fluid and the progressive spring installed on it. If you can stand the downtime, send out your stock shock to a shop that does full "organ transplants". They'll fit a modern damping mechanism inside it, and fit a spring that works for your weight and the sort of riding you do. SOmebody had it done and was very happy with it.
