clunking sound

I just got back from a 100 mile trip on forest roads. For last 35 miles, I noticed that there was a clunking sound when I hit larger bumps while sitting on the seat. I didn't hear the clunk sound while standing on the pegs or going over smaller bumps while sitting. Any diagnosis from the list Experts? My first thought is broken subframe bolts. I have not upgraded my bolts to the larger ones. With my 250 lbs beer butt banging down on the seat the oem ones may be broke. I won't be able to tear the seat off until later tonight to look. Craig, I would check the steering head bearings first. http://www.dualsportnews.com/klr/headbearing.html John Lyon --- closeke wrote:

You usually hear an annoying creaking/squeaking noise from the joints in the exhaust system when the subframe is wiggling around. I vote steering bearings. I've tightened mine twice in 14,000mi. Usually after offroading. Devon closeke wrote:

I have 11,000 on my 00 and recently I noticed a clunk feel when braking. Everything else up there seemed tight so I pulled the bars and just tightened the stering head slightly and that did the trick. I actually overtightened it first and had to back it off. I guess too tight is a bad thing. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Health - Feel better, live better http://health.yahoo.com

That reminds me. Try checking the tightness of the subframe bolts. All four of them.

I had two fender bolts come loose on last weekend's ride. I think they were attaching the fender to the rack. -Bryan

I should have added that to me it sounds like the clunk in coming from under the seat. Still the steering bearing? Craig A 15 Pruav

Do you have a centerstand?? If so, they will flop around a little when hitting bumps/jumps, and will make a clunking sound. MotorMark

flat repair in a can

I've used "SLIME" for about 10 years. I haven't had a flat since then. I've pulled nails/thorns/screws/staples out and never gave it a second glance. I recently changed to the monster tubes from Dual- Sport (cheaper elsewhere) and again, "SLIMED" them. I took a 7200+ mile trip in June (not including the 1200 in the back of a Ford) and didn't have a problem. Did pull one nail out in Washington (thanks guys!) but no problems. The slime came out almost instantly and sealed the hole. I normally ran 70-75mph, and the temps where HOT outside. I'll still run both until I'm convinced otherwise. millerized
