My A16 showed up Thursday. Much fun!
I bought the bike from pics from a KLR lister and I'd never set eyes
on a KLR, let alone set one.
Dumb maybe, but I think it's turning out fine.
Anyway, since I don't have any other KLR's around I was cusious about
a couple of noises, which I'm sure are normal as the bike runs fine,
but I'm just trying to learn what is normal for when things change.
When the bike idels less than 1K rpm, there is a high pitched
chinging sort of noise. Noise goes away as soon as rpm exceed 1000.
Would that be clutch plates or valve chain or what?
Then after I got off the bike after riding, there was a high pitched
constant tone. I thought it was a buzzing in my ears till I tilted
the bike and it stopped. Righted the bike and it came back. The
radiator fan stopped in a few seconds, but the tone lasted for a
minute or so.
Coolant whishing it had somewhere to go maybe?
Sorry for the stupid questions, but last time I rode dirt bikes there
was no water cooling, electric starters, or monoshocks.

Pat the idle should be set close to 1200 rpm's. The riinging that you hear
is from the fuel tank. After you turn the ignition off remove the key and
open the lid and the noise should cease. Ride and enjoy. TC

The KLR is a naturally clicky and clacky beast. Don't worry about it.
Just do your basic maintanance and you'll be fine. The ringing you hear
is actually a whistle, it's air being sucked into the gas tank to
replace the fuel you've burned.

Good morning Mavens.
My grandson wants me to install a anti thief type of shut off switch on
his old Firebird. Do I have to go to the ignition switch or the coil?
What wire do I look for? Just any hot one? Any help would be appreciated.

Probably the automatic decompression system- a lever on the end of the
exhaust cam hits the valve shim at 1000rpm or lower, increasing the duration
of one exhaust valve and making the motor easier to turn over. Over 1000rpm
centrifugal force swings it out of the way.
Turn up the idle to 1200-1300rpm.

Fuel tank vent, mine does this too. Ignore it.

my street bikes are all twin shocks, air cooled, kick only.
