I just happened to be near the Cycle Gear shop near Pac Bell park in downtown SF, and decided to run in and pickup an oil filter. The sales guy says if I buy 4 qts. of their special "Moto-X" oil they will throw in the filter for free. "How much a quart?" I ask. "$7.50" he replies. "No thanks" I said. "I'll just pickup something later." "I hope you aren't running automobile oil in your bike" he says. "Let me tell you why thats the worst thing you could do." I tell him I've already got about as much info on oil and motorcycles as I can handle, I just want the filter. Now here is the good part: He then says "Not interested huh? I guess you must ride a really CHEAP motorcycle!" I finally have to tell the guy again to just ring up the oil filter so I can go! I know there are lots of opinions on what oil to use, but really- Is the margin between this "special" oil and the Penzoil I might get at Kragen's so big that I might have to rebuild my engine in between oil changes? Of coarse, I won't be spending anymore money in that shop! Since I ride such a cheap motorcycle, I'm sure they won't miss me. Mike N.California A16

I've run a lot of bikes a lot of miles with no apparent damage using Castrol 10W-40. Now that I have a few more coins in my pocket, I spring for one of the manufacturer's oils (Hondaline, Yamalube, etc.). But those don't cost $7.50 per quart. At that price, the shop should be buying you the air filter of your choice as well :^D __Arden Kysely

You pay $7.50 a quart! They must love it when you walk in the door. I buy a gallon of Kawachem 10w40 for $10.95 either at the shop or through Buykawasaki. That's $2.74 a quart. Gino

Gino-- Hardly. And stop drooling, I don't live in New Mexico so I won't be buying oil from your shop. Either you missed my point or I made it poorly--the original post said the shop wanted to sell him Moto-X oil at $7.50 a quart. __Arden

Since Pac Bell Park was built across the street from that location the stores rent has probably gone skyhigh, thus the hard sale. That store is hosed by the change in the neighborhood. By the Way...my old klr had 90,000 miles on car oil, Master engine builder Vey la Cruz told Elden all the bearings were good. That's right all good. Castrol 20/50W and/or Chevron Delvac.
